Thanks for that, tralalala, I thought that was just what I was looking for, to start with. However, it appears that only other paid-up users can see your location. And so, the hunt goes on.
Thanks again, tralalala.

Well, in the US Microsoft sells a product called Street and Trips, I think it's called MapPoint in Europe. It may have detailed maps for Europe, perhaps others, but for most of the rest of the world it just has major cities, no other features. It can import the txt file from the Delorme software as pushpins and display them on the map. If you make a custom pushpin bmp of just four pixels, the display is a series of dots that join to form a track of where the log points are. On non-detailed maps, you see the cities, not the detail, of where you have been. You might give that a look. Buy a copy for whomever you want to see where you have been, then email them the log file to import it themselves. Not Internet, but a workaround. Also, by doing that you have stored a log of where you have been to remind you of the trip you have taken.

Thanks for the software tips, I'll be sure to give them a look once my order arrives.
Something else has just occured to me though. With there being no UK supplier for the Delorme BlueLogger, I ordered mine directly from Delorme in the US to be shipped by international courier. This obviously means the power supply for the charger unit isn't going to work for me over here. :( Does the standard power supply accept an input up to 240V allowing me to simply use a travel adapter to alter the pins for the sockets over here or will I need to source a seperate unit for the different voltages over here? I've looked on Delorme's site and the only specs they offer concern the unit itself as opposed to the power supply that the charger ships with.
Thanks again!

I don't know about Delorme BlueLogger power supply but most of the US power supplies can handle 110V-240V. All you need is an adapter. I think. You can buy one with many different pin configurations so you can be on the safe side during your journey.

It should work. If not, any 5.4v-6v supply, about 1A will do. In fact, the Dell Axim power supply will charge it nicely, so you don't have to have a separate one just for the BlueLogger.

Hi Jake
I'm looking at a GPS receiver as well. I have a couple of questions.
What I want to do is to be able to walk or drive somewhere and then display and show the route I took to someone on my x50v using mapping software. Am I right in assuming that you can do this with the BlueLogger? Also will it display properly with any mapping software such as ONC or other software? The Delorme site just shows Street Atlas.

That's marvellous news. Travelling the world for a year, rucksack space is very much at a premium for me so 1 power supply fewer to carry is a real boon.

Not exactly. It exports files in various formats, but none are, to my knowledge, directly viewable on the X50 itself. You can display it on a laptop with MS S&T by importing the data, but I haven't tried that with the PocketStreets and have doubts that it would work. If you want to have a breadcrumb trail on a PPC, some of the mapping packages do that. Mapopolis, for example, can drop a blue dot every second to show where you have been. Some of the others have similar features.

I have a Globalsat BC307 CF card with external antenna and recommend it highly, it is much faster and more sensitive than a [work] Garmin I use, a little faster than my ageing Magellan 315. One of the problems you will face is the use of GPS on vehicles with metallic sunscreen in the windows, these just about kill the signals completely, so don't expect to have it work on the buses in Hong Kong etc. An external antenna fixes this, but draws attention to your expensive toys. Memory Map on the PPC is much less satisfying than Ozi CE, but has some nicer desktop features. Take a few extra sd cards with maps AND novels to read, it saves space. Make sure your digital camera uses one of the X5 card formats so that you have something bigger than the camera screen to show/view them on. Take a couple of audiobooks (I like Bill Bryson) as well as some good music. Oh yes, and a toothbrush.

What I was hoping to do was just take the the BlueLogger with me while walking or driving around cities I know and then import the route to a x50v back at the hotel and on to a map diplay such as OCN to show later. Is this possible?

Don't drive and look at a GPS, that has got to be worse than driving with a cell phone. Check you progress by making rest stops or if you have a companion in the vehicle let them control the device and you watch the road!!

Flintlock1776, it's the fact that a PPC, with GPS and mapping software can make navigation so much easier that actually makes it safer. I've seen folks trying to read a paper map while moving, and that's a lot more dangerous than glancing at a map, or listening to a voice prompt from the PPC. The fact of life is that distractions while driving do contribute to accidents, but the worst of those distractions could be your companion trying to give you navigation support, too.

OK, you have a lot of questions to be answered, so I will help with the one that I can!

Also, once I have my GPS data, is there a website I can upload my GPS data to that will plot my route around the planet for folks back home to see where we have been? It needn't have detailed maps, just a general map of the world with detail down to, say, City level so that our friends have a general overview of where we've been (I'm not particuarly interested in letting them know anything more detailed than that!).

It depends on what software you end up using, and it's logging output format. There is a website http://www.gpsvisualizer.com that will let you upload your log file and create a map -- see the example page http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/examples.html
Anyways, I hope this helps! Keep us updated on your progress. I might do something similar when I travel from the U.S. (North Dakota) to South Korea through Japan.
