Q regarding City Select and "unlocking"
Im baffled by the "unlocking" stuff they talk about regarding City Select -
UNLOCKING AND LIVE TRACKING:
North America City Select v5.0 CD map data must be unlocked prior to use which can be done free of charge via Garmin's unlock pages or by phone. When using a locked MapSource product, the real-time track plotting function will work only with a valid unlock code for the GPS unit being used.
I was planning to buy a used copy of this software from a guy I work with (He sold his Garmin GPS)I would then then get a GPS10 with the hopes that I could use that software.
My question is basically, will it work?? Or is the software "tied" to something, a PC, another GPS??
I don't want to buy it and then find out I can't use it of course.
Thanks!

It sounds like your friend had something other then a PDA running a Garmin GPS device. So I think you will be missing the software to run on your PDA and also have no way of transferring or running the maps on your PDA. I used to have a IQue 3600 and for a short time a M5. I still have the version 6 City Select cd from the IQue 3600 But until I get the GPS Deluxe, along with the software to install on the PDA There's no way I can use the maps. There's just no option to transfer the maps to the PDA.
Plus, City Select is at the very least at version 6 now (which I didn't see any difference from ver. 5). I would just pick up the deluxe version of the GPS 10 unless your friend can get the software installed on your PDA and show that it will accept data from a Garmin bluetooth GPS device.

Yes, it came with his Garmin 276C which he sold. And it is version 6.

along with the software to install on the PDA
Ah, I just read this again. So there is special software needed to install the City Select software?
Man, what a drag. :(

I would recommend you get the GPS10 with the NA CitySelect package. Don't get any older used version as I don't think it works as the iQue navigation software was created after CitySelect version 5.
The GPS bundles are a great price. I bought my GPS10 as a Deluxe package. Its worth every dime. Came up to Can$310 including the shipping. You should be able to get around those same prices.
Just google gpscity.
Hope that helps.

Well, that's what Im trying to figure out. The NACS he has is V6. Is that not the latest?
He'll sell me the software for dirt cheap. A LOT less than buying the whole GPS10 package.
The GPS 10 alone is $140 from TVnav.com. Or $210 with the full package.
But I guess there's no way to make it work unless I get the package deal.
That's all Im trying to confirm.

Yes, it will work. That is the latest version. There is a program update that brings it up to version 6.5. Otherwise, if you can get it cheaper separately, do so.
There is no 3D like other programs, but seriously, I don't need the "frills". I am after stability and robustness and getting safely from point A to point B. I've used teh iQue software over 17 hours of driving and I have to admit I also launched the GS_Player to play MP3 music while the iQue software was running. My wife did that, not me as I was driving... :)
Also, we found the Garmin iQue software very intuitive. The more I use it, the more I find it very stable and robust. I don't see any of the s/w issues afflicting other GPS devices.
So, yes, if you get the GPS10 stand-alone and the software NA CitySelect v6.0 full unlocking separately, it will work fine.

I'm pretty sure the GPS10 stand-alone (not the deluxe version) does not come with the Que application for maps and routing. Doublecheck to be sure.
If this is the case, the CitySelect software will not be of any use on your PDA. You will be able to use it on your desktop if you manage to unlock it. But any maps you create will just be an unreadable binary file on the Axim because there are no applications to go with it.
If you get the GPS 10, get the Deluxe version.

I have used the iQue/Mapsource for more than a year and I have evaluated a GPS 10. If you get the OEM version, you are taking a big chance that you'll just have an expensive BT GPS with no software.
You can go to this dedicated Garmin forum for confirmation:
http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/foru...s=&forumid=144
The Que Applications include a map viewer, route planner, POI find, tracks manager, trip meter, etc. This is what you're paying for in the Deluxe version.

Ok, so basically it would be unusable without the Que software. Got it.
Thanks for the link to that site too!

You can still use it as a regular GPS with other 3rd-party apps like Mapopolis. But it defeats the purpose of getting a Garmin.

Ok, well I'm not really locked into the GPS10 and the software it has. But Ive really liked the previous Garmin stuff Ive had so I thought i'd go that route.
Does Mapopolis have the detail like the City Select does? Gas stations, restaurants etc etc?
Just briefly looking over the site here there appears to be a ton of software options and hardware.
I guess all I know for sure is I want Bluetooth. :)

Sorry about the misinformation. When I first researched this awhile back, and bought it much later, Garmin had this following link for nRoute to use with the MapSource program.
http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=575
It takes you to their nRoute web page. I am not sure when I last saw it, but I thought I remembered seeing/reading that it could be downloaded. The link still works and exists, but I cannot see it leading me to be able to download the nRoute program.
I would recommend getting the GPS10 Deluxe version after seeing that the link above does not get you the nRoute software.
A quick call to Garmin should resolve this for you. I cannot imagine why the nRoute software if it is bundled with the GPS10, is not made for sale if it is not downloadable for free to customers that have bought GPS10 OEM and the Mapsource programs later.
Odd Garmin GPS strategy.

I can verify that the OEM version doesn't come with anything. I just sent back a OEM version that was sent to me instead of the deluxe version by accident.
There is nothing on the City Select software to install the applications on the PDA and when you install the Map CD's to your PC you will be able to select what maps you want and your only choice will be "send map to GPS". However since your PDA won't be "talking" to the program on your PC it will not find a GPS to send to. Plus, the maps are just that, maps. No software for the PDA at all. But like I said before, if your friend can get it to work on your PDA then there's not much difference between 5 and 6 that I could see.
