Question Cold, warm, hot

I just got my Deleu GPS in the mail yesterday. It is really cool, of course I looked like an idiot walking around my neighborhood staring at my PDA, but hey.

A question I have is what is the difference between a cold start, warm start, and hot start and when would you do which?

Thanks.

Cold: GPS has been powered off for lets say an hour. You start it up and it has to find the satellites. Can take anywhere from less than a minute to a couple of minutes depending on terrain around you.

Warm: The GPS has been idle a few minutes and not powered off. Still has contact with the satellites. Starts up quickly.

Hot: It's on and running.

One additional comment on Cold: For GPS receivers that remember where they were when shut down, if you move them more than about 300 miles when powered off and then turn them back on, they have to do a cold start. Depending on the receiver, cold starts can be between 2 and 10 minutes to acquire. If you move during the acquisition cycle, that TTFF (time to first fix) can expand significantly.

To add on JakeRich's comments, most SW stores the last GPS position, so if you have not moved much, you should be able to get a fix within 1 minute even after you power off the PPC. This has been my experience. I think this is also considered a warm start. For example, when I reached my destination, I powered off the PPC but did not exit the application. When I turned the PPC on againat the same location, it only took 10-20 seconds to get a fix.

Another comment on getting a signal quickly. Most people hold the PPC and CF card vertically when trying to acquire a signal. That's not the optimal way. I learned the quickest way to get a signal to the lay the PPC with CF card horizontally, facing the sky. This is to make sure there is no blockage from any direction.

Cool Re: Cold, warm, hot

Hi Ayrk
I have just place an order for one of these Deleu GPS (Holux GM-270), is the headphone socket accessible when the GPS is in the CF slot.
can't wait to recieve mine, what GPS software are you using, read that TomTom navigator 2 is very good.

Re: Re: Cold, warm, hot

I haven't actually tried the headphone jack with the GPS plugged in but I think it is accessible. The GPS antenna part of the CF card is no wider than a normal CF card.

I ended up choosing Mapopolis and it is great. From what I've read it seems like the US preferes Mapopolis while UK prefers TomTom.
