Did you buy from us? If yes, please write us your order number via PM to discuss about warranty replacement in the windshield pedestal or proper usage guidance.

Usage Tip for greater performance:
1) We encourage users to give some "moisture" to the plastic suction cup prior to depressing the windshield pedestal lock.

2) Also, if possible, try to hold and push it against the windshield and slid the suction cup up and down slightly on the windshield to get a good fit prior to depressing the windshield pedestal lock.

Most users including us are able to get a windshield mount stick on for months without it falling down to the floor. Hope this helps.

It took long enough to get one sent to me in canada, that I cannot be bothered to try and send it back for a new arm or anything. It is just easier to get a differnet brand than bother with RMA and everything.

Want to post this here for people reading this thread. OCN 4.2 that I got today does have a metric option and have had it confirmed by the developer that ver 5 will also include this option.

Sorry for the bad information. Have been focusing heavily on the Beta version of OcN 5 lately.

Please report back the coverage in your area and share with others your experience with OcN4. Thanks in advance.

Exclamation A stern warning to anyone considering Arkon windshield CM700 Powered GPS Ready Mount

If you're considering purchasing the Arkon CM700 Powered GPS Ready Mount, or a similar mount for your PDA inside your car, then you should read this thread and make an informed choice as to your available alternatives.

Until now, I have only seen but one thread concerning this issue, and frankly, I am flabbergasted and appalled by this product I have purchased.

AximSite Member Complaint

I'll be frank: I am NOT a newbie to the computer/gadget market. In fact, I'm end-user and typically purchase more gadgets in 1 year than most people do in their entire lifetime.

I bought a Dell Axim X50v PDA from Dell and decided to get the BT-338 GPS w/ Arkon Windshield mount PDA holder w/ X50v connection. I purchased both the GPS & mount from buygpsnow.com (great company!).

Here are the THREE (yes, three) problems I am experiencing with this unit inside my 1999 Subaru Impreza.

First, the PDA's arms are pitiful at holding my X50v in place. Yes, I retract the arms then squeeze them as hard as I can towards the PDA, but it makes no difference. A medium shake, rattle or turn in my Impreza and the PDA almost falls out.

Second, the windshield suction cup comes off relatively easily. I have wiped my windshield countless times with 75% Isopropyl Alcohol. I also wiggle the windshield mount in place on my window to get the best possible grip. It made no difference whatsoever.

Third, and most dangerous. The round plastic ball, which attaches the PDA carriage unit to the windshield's suction cup arm is unimaginably loose. This isn't even funny. I adjust the GPS to my eye level, but even the SLIGHTEST movement and the PDA faces down. What does this mean? Seeing as how the carriage's arms do not their job, my PDA falls off the unit and onto my stickshift lever.

I was driving in San Francisco today. Relatively cool day, no sun, a little bit of drizzling. In-car temperature a comfortable 15-20*C. The round PDA adjusting mechanism has been acting up all day. I adjust it and it just falls back down. So I constantly adjust it, carefully avoiding any tugging, pulling or harsh movement. Suddently, the windshield's suction cup pops right off, and my PDA easily pops off the arms that were supposed to hold it. This was on 19th Avenue in heavy traffic.

I have no idea how this defectively designed product hit the market, but it nearly caused three car accident. (I caught the PDA, but ignored the windshield mount.

Takes this as a serious warning if you're considering this product. This is in now way a bash towards Arkon. I very, VERY excited when I got this item, but my experiences have turned excitement into utter disgust for this product.

Anyways, I have followed every suggestion imaginable, but to no avail. In my opinion, this product should be taken off the market and scraped given its incredibly dangerous nature.

Any comments or question are appreciated.
Sev

Did you try to read the manuel? I had the same loose ball when it arived and I was installing it in my truck in the Fedex parking lot. I saw in the install instructions that there was a screw to tighten if it was too loose did so and no problem. I work construction and smoke so my windshield is very dirty and it sticks fine. This is truck and it bounced around like crazy and the x50v has never come loose. It looks like it might so I took the mount part off the pedestal and while tugging with the other hand checked the hold. It is solid or at least not likely to fall out. The axim looks to be a little wider than this thing was designed for but would take some serious pressure to get it out. I plan on carving out the foam a bit on the weekend just for my peace of mind.

I am not saying you are imagining things but this seems to be a quality issue or defective unit than a design one, maybe with a little setup problem :) . I think I got good value for my $40.00 there is slight hum from the speaker but you can't hear it unless you put your ear right up to it. The suction cup has metal plunger that sucks it upto the glass mine would be hard to remove without releasing it our peeling up one corner to let in air. I was either very lucky or you very unlucky.

This is a bargain unit now we have heard of two of them that are defective. Buyer beware especially if you don't buy from buygpsnow that have a great rep of standing behnd there products. If you notice any of the descibed defects return it right away and don't use it

I may have bought another unit now just because I never thought it was so handy and the price is what sold me on getting one. Now I sit in the truck and use a blue tooth mouse and kb to type while it sit in landscape in the mount and watched a movie while waiting for pizza tonight. For in car navigating it is must.

Calgary,

I saw your post in the other thread. I assure you it's not a setup problem. I have been toying with the mount for countless hours and no matter what I do, it still exhibits the same behavior.

I've read whatever instructions I had. Didn't help.

As for that mount, I'm not really sure. It looks like it has the same kind of arms.

Kinda sucks that I paid for this mount and it turned out like this.

It looks like the same system with the arms but a bit bulkier. I got rid of my x5 awhile ago but rememver it being a bit thicker then the x50 so I wouldn't get the akron without planning on modifying it. The akron would probally fit a slim Palm type unit the best but I find it adequate for my x50v just want to shave the foam a but so that I can snug it up a bit more.

I will try to decribe the system for you there are two arms on the side with foam that sqeeze together to hold the unit in place. The foam is cut in a "v" so that in a ideal setup the unit would sit in the valley. With my x50v it sits on outer edge of the "v" not the valley so there is less foam left before it could slip out.

Yeah must be a bad unit. Have you contacted the folks at buygpsnow.com ? I have found them to be very reasonable about these things. Obviously you don't want a replacement but maybe credit, upgrade could be arranged. If I were the manufacturer I would want the unit back to for quality control. If the tension screw does not work this is a major safety/pda damage issue.

No problem what's $27.00 extra for shipping and brokerage for OCN4 if I had know it was metric and order it to start with :)
Just remember me when I come back for upgrades and more of your great products. I am blown away by OCN4. I got Dest 3 working with your advice thanks. I was going to test the 2 for a month and write up a comparison but now I can't see myself using the D3 much except for the POI stuff which is far superior than OCN4. I am going to write up some impression in the product forum or GPS talk rather than add it here. Thanks again for all your help.

Let's get more info to better understand your issues.

buyGPSnow.com Response: Did the arms relaxe themselves over time? The locking arms are lock in position by GEAR machanism and the gear may has been damaged due to applying too much pressure when closing it.

buyGPSnow.com Response: DO NOT use Alcohol stuff to clean the rubber. This is highly NOT recommended as the chemical will most likely HARDEN the suction cup. Hence, the custion cup may not be effective anymore!

buyGPSnow.com Response: You may have to tighten a screw in the ball join in every 2 to 3 months interval. Did you try to locate the screw and tighten it?
