Concerns about Dell GPS Bluetooth System

I purchased the Dell GPS Bluetooth system with my Axim.

http://accessories.dell.com/sna/Popu...5769&price=206

Ive only used it twice and have had difficulties with it both times and am just concerned that it might continue to be problematic.

The first time I tried to use it, it would load the program, and it would ask me to pick my Bluetooh device, which it detected, but then it would just hang there and nothing else would happen.

I did a soft reset and then manually turned off and back on the Bluetooth signal before loading the program and then it worked fine. I discovered, I needed to manually turn on the Bluetooth signal (I usually have it disabled) before loading the program or else it would hang.

Since then I had loaded the A03 ROM flash, so I think that takes care of that problem.

Now, just today, I was having another problem accessing the GPS. When I would laucnh the program, it would detect my Bluetooth device, but when the map would come up, it said it couldnt find a GPS device. I would reset it, tell it to redetect my Bluetooth device, and then it worked.

I mean, I've gotten it working both times, but each time I've had to fugg with it for 4-5 minutes before getting it working. Am I just having poor beginners luck, or is this typical that you need to do a soft reset and manually turn everything back on before this unit will work?

Another thing, and I dont know if this is a problem, but the amber batt light on my actual GPS unit won't go on. The green Sat light, and the Blue bluetooth light both come on, but the amber light wont. I see it quickly flash when I plug in the power cord, but it doesnt come on. Is that a problem?

Sorry for the long post, but I'm a noob and just concerned.

Sounds like the same problem I had, resolved by pairing the handheld to the GPS device.

Go into you BT manager, and select paired devices, and set up a pairing.

Once it is paired, and you enter the GPS application, it will turn on the blurtooth, and connect to the GPS automagically.

The pairing code is 2003 I believe, I posted it here a while back.

Thanks for the info, I definitely need to do that. I will post my results when I go home from work.

I also answered my own question about the amber batt light. I didnt realize that the GPS has an internal battery. I thought it HAD to be plugged into the cigarette lighter to work, but apparently once the battery is charged, that light doesnt come on.

If the amber light does not come on after you plug the charger in ring Dell for a replacement.

Make sure that you have enough RAM available before running Dell GPS software- minimum 20 MBytes.

For BT communication troubleshooting try GPS info freeware and connect + disconnect few times.

I always turn BT on manually before linking the the GPS.

Do not log coms onto SD card it tends to get corrupted.

I’ve had similar problems. Most of the time it has been user error. I often forget to turn on BT . I have found that if I turn on the GPS receiver and soft reset the Axim before I launch the Dell Navigation SW, it comes up quickly.

I took a trip recently to Utah (from Dallas) and when I got there I started up my GPS. It took a long time to get that first fix, like 15-20 minutes. I expected it to take some time in a “new” location, just didn’t expect it to take that long. After that first fix delay, the unit worked fine.. Over all, I'm happy with my Dell GPS unit. Just wish I could get the NavTeq map update sometime soon...

With the Dell software, and a properly paired GPS reciever, the application will auto launch bluetooth.

Dom,
I have the Dell GPS unit and software also. The Receiver is paired with my X50v, But I have to turn on Bluetooth at the bottom and then open the Navigation software. How are you able to get the software to turn on Bluetooth? And when you exit the software, will it also turn off Bluetooth? That would be an awesome feature.

Got a notice in the Dell software that updates are available for maps, never seen that before.

Jetta,

when you get the screen to select your GPS device there is a check box that says Always use this device.

I think you need to select that FIRST, then select the gps.

If that doesn't work I'll re install the software and do a walkthrough.
