Exclamation TomTom 5 (Root Directory)

Need help. i have installed TT5 and it works like a treat. My problem is that i want to install the GB Postal codes and have been advised not to install it on the SD card but in the Root Directory. Can anyone tell me where i can find this?

Your information is incorrect. TomTom 5 UK postcodes can be installed on the SD card. Make a directory called
ZIP
on the SD card and put the postcode file in it (Great_Britain.Postal). Make another empty directory on the SD card called
TomTom
The postcodes will then work without using up 8Mb of precious internal memory.

Thanks a lot for the help. I had the same problem and after creating the empty folder TomTom it works absolutely fine.

Thanks!

Tomtom 300 and updates

I have an old Tomtom 300 and have the safety camera feature installed. However since purchasing this option I have never been able to update the safety cameras. I have contacted tomtom on many occasions and followed all their instructions but still I cannot update. I have the latest tomtom home (2.3) installed but as soon as I attach my tomtom the screen on the computer goes to switch on your tomtom and I cannot get any further. I have switched off and on, I have tried another USB but no joy. If I disconnect tomtom I hear the ping that I have removed the USB. I have followed the instructions about copy the home images-zip but I don't have a clue what they mean by copy the unzipped folder home_images to the root directory of your tomtom. I am not so good with IT and don't know where I find the root directory or how to copy anything to it. Not even sure if this will solve the problem. Help!!

Yes I have followed all these steps. It is the same result on a different computer. The computer seems to recognise the device but not Home. The message simply goes to the steps advising plug your device in and switch on and it will be recognised in a few moments. Sadly it is not. I have tried a different USB port but absolutely nothing. As you know this has been ongoing for a very long time.

I don't know anything about the Tomtom 300, but I just had a look at the user guide to see if there was anything there to help.

The only thing I can suggest from reading that is that you might try a reset of the device.
Apparently there is a reset button.
Quote:
in the event of a problem you can reset the unit by removing it from the cradle and using a straightened paper clip in the reset hole on the unit's bottom (just behind the release button).
I don't know if this will remove your favorites or any other data, but it might be worth a try.

The root directory is the main folder of the Tomtom, again I don't know the file structure but to put it simply, if you wanted to put something in the root directory of the majority of PCs, you would put it directly in the C: drive.

So, if you are able to get to the tomtoms files via your computers "windows explorer" you copy the folder that you need and paste it to the drive that is your Tomtom, it might be E: or F: etc depending on how many things you have connected to your computer.

Or, if the Tomtom has a card, you can copy the folder onto the card using a card reader then put it back in the tomtom and move it to the main directory.
It might even work directly from the card.

Anyway, I'm only guessing, but maybe it will help.
