Beginner GPS Question! - Please help! :-)

Hi all,

I have just received my new X50v and love it so far. What I am looking for now is a powered mount for my car that looks somewhat stylish and will give me GPS readouts/maps.

For the layout of my car, it would be very obstructing having something come down from the windsheild, and would like to be able to mount the holder to my dash (I have a large dash).

With the windshield suction mounts, can these also be securly attached to my dash? One concern is that in an accident, the last thing I need is my ppc flying around and hitting me in the head.. =P How well do these hold on?

My second question is this: I want to minimize the wire clutter in my car as much as possible. I'll be using a cassette adapter from my X50 to my car to listen to mp3s and get gps readouts through my car stereo, so a built in speaker is not necessairly required.

What solutions would you experts recommend? I don't really ever see myself using GPS outside of my car, so an All-in-one solution should work, but I am very open to suggestions. Please! :-)

Currently, I'm looking at this one:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...782281735&rd=1

It's quite cheap, all-in-one and its not *that* ugly, although it could be better looking. Has anyone had any experience with this specific device?

Thanks for ANY tips anyone can provide!

Hexman, that unit is in UK. Where are you? The reason I ask is that if you are in the US or Canada, you may want to look for a US/Canadian vendor so that you can get quicker/cheaper shipping and local support.

I'm not a fan of the fully integrated units. Too many things can go wrong with them. I'd suggest you spend some time looking at powered mounts and BlueTooth GPS units. Arkon and Seidio have powered mounts to fit the X50 series, and just about any BT GPS receiver will do nicely. The Arkon and Seidio mounts aren't quite so ugly, either.

There is a picture of a Seidio G2500 mounted on the windshield of a rental car in this article. You can find more reviews here, including this one of the G2500 mount for the X5 series, again with a picture, and this one for the X50 series.

JakeRich,

Thanks for your reply. Yup, I'm in Canada actually but don't mind waiting for the mail. I just want a reliable device in my car. The only thing thats stopping me from going the BT way is I'll have to worry about turning it on every time, worrying about the batteries (and if I have a charger cable for it, will just add more clutter in my car), etc.

An all-in-one solution seems much simpler to me -- slide the Axim and drive, simple, no fuss.

Do you know of another reliable solution that I may be able to use? A mount which can rotate to landscape would be definately prefered.

By the way, do you know if these mounts can be successfully attached to the dashboard of a car, or do they specifically need to bond to glass?

Thanks for your comments so far!
