Which GPS software allows for map region exporting?

Like a few others on this site, I'm new to this and am shopping for the software for my first GPS setup. I have an x50v and plan to get a Haicom 405 or the BT-338.

I've been doing a little reading and recently discovered that OCN5 will not let you export regions of the map, and I don't want to buy a seperate CF/SD card to carry around a map of the entire US. I don't leave Florida that often, and when I do, it's by plane and I'd like the option to take just my destination maps with me.

Can you guys help me gather a list of the popular GPS software titles that have this feature? Then I can start narrowing down from there.

Thanks!
Aaron

I'm using Pocket Map Navigator and it lets you load just what you want. It breaks up the nation into 5 regional maps where you basically load only highways and then you can load maps down to street level in only those counties you want. I live in NC and have the whole state, the SE regional map, and the FL state. I travel from here to FL but I don't stop in SC or GA except for gas so I don't need the street level for those states. That setup is 156MB on my SD card.

I have just completed a 2 week vacation 3000 miles away. I flew to California. I went to mapopolis and downloaded only the maps I needed. Its a great program, but the options and pricing can be confusing. Check it out and email me if you need further help.

In OCN5 you don't have to store the whole US map on your SD/CF card unless you want the seamless US option. You can just load the region that is of interest to you. So if you are flying from FL to CA then you can just load the West Coast map. Of course the West Coast map will include CA, Nevada and lots of other states that might not interest you.

I believe nearly every other software allows you the option of being able to load only specific regions/cities/counties. In Mapopolis you have to load by counties. iGuidance allows you to load a specific region. Since iGuidance allows it, all the offshoot from Netropa engine like Dell, Belkin, PrymeNav, Routis, etc should also give you this option. OCN4 did have this option but for some technical reason (as per OCN support forum) they discontinued it in OCN5.

I think they are BSing. In their FAQs, they said it was possible with the seamless (shameless?) versions though it is not in the same name. They just want you to spend more money for the xxl version.

I also believe they are BSing.

Why would you remove an excellent and useful feature like route creation and come up with this stupid idea of having a seamless US map. I don't know of anybody who intends to drive all over US and would be excited to have a 1GB USA map on your card. If I ever to intend to drive all over US then I also certainly intend to take my laptop with me. It would then make sense to cut your route map whenever you need it.

Why on earth would I want a 230MB Central Northeastern US map on my SD card when I could have very well done it quite easily with a 30MB map that I really use on a day-to-day basis?

Its not like I decide to drive to work one fine morning and on the way I think.... "Hmmm. Excellent sunny day outside. Who wants to work today? Let me drive down from MI to West Virginia, just for the heck of it. And the best thing is OCN5 has given me this excellent system by which I can just drive down there without cutting any map. Yippeee!!! OCN5 rocks!!! I am on top of the world because of OCN5!!!"

Mapopolis is great because you can download a county or a whole state. With the state option you can download them as zip files and unzip on your Axim when needed. This is helpful if for some reason you jump to a neighboring state for some reason.

iGuidance also allows downloading 1 state at a time, or you can do a radius of an area.

Ok, I think I'll check out Mapopolis, iGuidance, and OCN5. Those seem to be the popular choices around here. I'm glad to hear that with OCN5, you can at least load a sub-region. Maybe I can just buy a seperate 256/512meg SD card just for the maps, and leave my 1gig CF to my aplications, movies, pics, etc.

I gotta head on over to GPS Passion (I think that's the right place) and decide which one I like.

Check their support forum, because there are a number of messages about this issue. They said they bought the map export tool from someone else. The other company has dropped support for the product. Could be a line of bull, but who knows. You can send a region to the PDA in OCN5. The main 48 states are devided into six regions from 220MB to 231MB. Canada, Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico are each also seperate region if you even need them you can get with the the $139 package. You can also buy OCN5 with a single region for $79 if you like. Me personally, I wanted the seamless US plus Canada which meant I had to pay $100 above the free upgrade from OCN4 to get the seamless map. I put a 2GB CF card in my X50v for OCN4/5 itself and all the maps. I then use the extra space for other things I want available all the time. I use my SD slot for other thinks I do not want available all the time.

Second on that! :approve: :approve: :approve:

I guess I'm just one of those who refuse to be bound by non-sense rules.

You won't find many OCN replies there. They were censured (sp?) out because they trash-talked about another GPS software maker, which I also found unethical.
