Has anyone used the Delorme Earthmate and their X-Map software? Its attractive because it has Street Atlas software and can also inport maps from Topo 4.0.
I don't have the Earthmate, but I do Xmap and I cannot recommend it. It has major out-of-date problems, the maps are not very true-to-life and it is awkward to use. The true-to-life problem is a result of the way they chose to implement the maps. The mapping goes from point-to-point, with straight lines between these points, even if the road curves. So the Beltway around Washington, DC, for example, is not shown with smooth curves, it's shown as a series of straight lines connected together. You are almost never actually shown ON the road, just to either side of it. The errors in out-of-date areas are for roads changed more than a couple of years ago. Mapopolis and Teletype both got it right, but Xmap looks to be 8-9 years out of date.
I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck connecting the serial earthmate GPS receivers via the dell serial sync / null modem connection?
I guess If you can make the serial connection successfully, it will require XMap or some other Delorme software to "see" the receivers proprietary output.
If someone was successful at making this work, I would like to know how, before buying the XMap software and finding out I can't even make the serial connection to the Axim.
I have a serial Earthmate GPS and I just ordered a cable that is supossed to let me connect it to my Axim. I already have the XMap software, so I guess I should be able to let you know soon. I plan on using it this weekend (8/2/2003), if I get the cable in time.
I have bought the NEW USB EARTHMATE from Delorme. I must say it works really well, though I haven't tried any other gps. I'm running it with PocketMap Navigator, I love that program! XMap may be good though. Just remember that it does come with maps that are really poor, but you can import better maps from Street Atlas or Topo, Delormes desktop software.

I'd be interested in this too!
My other option would be to get a new TeleType Bluetooth unit and try to run DeLorme's StreetMaps software on it. Is anyone doing that?
I have the USB Earthmate GPS and the Power Pack that turns it into Bluetooth. I use it with my Asus and it works great. Very easy to set up. I am using the Street Atlas software.

I use Street Atlas 2005 for Handheld, with the Bluetooth Earthmate GPS and works great. The Bluetooth adapter uses a rechargable battery that they include, or you can hook it up to the car power, or you can use 4 AA battiers. Did not do anything other than turn it on and it worked perfectly. I got the EarhtMate where I can use it with a USB cable with my laptop.

Hi,
I have SA2004 with USB earthmate GPS. I have been using it with my laptop. The GPS is good, but SA 2004 map (delorme) is not accurate. I plan to use the GPS with my PPC Dell AXIM 5. How do I connect the GPS to PPC, special cables ? How do I set the PocketMap Navigator on PPC so it can see the earthmate GPS ....
