Question Updating Maps (cost)

Do not have a GPS as yet, but some questions. Following the link from the Dell site for updating the Dell Navigation System maps leads to NAVTEQ and a cost of $99.00. One of the NAVTEQ FAQS says they normally update twice a year. Not sure it would the $99.00 each time, but it could add up quickly.
How does this compare with other GPS software/map programs?

Well I haven't tried any others, but Mapopolis costs the same amount of $$.

You certainly don't need to update your maps that often though, unless you will be traveling to quickly expanding cities.

The way Mapopolis is setup you'd get an unlimited # of downloads for maps for the $99. I'm not sure how Navteq is setup. Will they allow you to use the old maps if you choose not to update them? Mapopolis' maps will expire one year after you register, so you're kind of forced to renew when you need it. :rolling:

Compared to something like Onstar though.. you're still saving a bundle. hehe

Don't have GPS or software yet, still researching. The Dell Navigation System NAVTEQ maps come on two CD's so I would think they can be used as long as you want.

No, this is not right. Mapopolis maps never expire. YOu can use them with the software forever. The 1 year limit is the time you can logon to the site to download the version you purchased, but once you have them they don't expire. You're never forced to renew. You only have to renew when you want to get the latest version of the maps.
