I am looking into purchasing GPS software for my X50v. I am really considering either OCN5, TomTom, or Iguidance. I would really like to have the option to load up sections of the US or at times maybe the entire US. For instance if I am traveling from Florida to Maine, I don't want to have to plan my trip out into sections or regions. I know that OCN5 had the seamless US option, but, to me, $180 is a lot to spend right now.
I was reading somewhere that TomTom 5 just released an update with a seamless US option. Can anyone confirm this.
Also, what about Iguidance. Does their maploader allow you to pick the states/regions you want and it will stitch/seam them together so you don't have to switch regions in the middle of your trip??
Also, something else of importance to me is POI. Which one of these would probably have the best POI database??
OCN5 also has region maps besides the seamless one you can load. The (L) version include the all the USA regions and Canada. The problem is there is no way to route from one region map to the next. You have to route from the start to a place that exists on both region maps. All region maps overlap by at least a state. You then have to change maps and route to your final destination. OCN4 had the MapExport tool that let you create custom maps. Unfortunately Navigon dropped support for it. I am sure OCN is working on a way around this. It would be nice if they had a Interstate and major highway map like some of the other products, but I think Navigon caught them with their pants down. For now you can either live with it or get a seamless map. Hopefully this is something they fix in version 6.
I confirm. Tomtom has seamless maps. Do a search on this site and it will lead you to a thread that shows this to be the case. I have tomtom 2004 and love it, the new one is probably even better.
Spoke with Tom Tom regarding seamless maps on TTN 5 for ppc. Seamless is only on Go 300 & 700 models. For PPC to travel across USA you need to switch region maps, unlike OCN the regions do not overlap, but are adjacent.
paul_loren, you might want to look at OCN's website to see the regions that they have available. Some states are duplicated at the edges, so you can plan into that state, then from that state into the next region over. For Florida to Maine, one of the regions is the entire East Coast, so you can do that in one map. Take a look to see if the regions fit your needs.
Jake, I am familiar with OCN Maps, I was repsponding to post about tom tom & seamless

Well aware that OCN regions overlap, the poster asked if Tom TOM 5 had seamless maps for PPC, accoding to Tom TOM the answer is no, so in that regards OCN is better with overlapping regions.
Sorry, I was actually trying to respond to the original poster. The OP said

You don't have to buy the seamless US map to get from Florida to Maine, you can do that with just the East regional map.

Yeah, and that is what I will probably do. So, I guess the following is my best option.
Is this going to be the best option. And can anyone confirm the price of the upgrade, is it really $69.95 more???
You could contact OCN through their website to make sure you get the best buy. They can help you make a good selection. You'll find them heppy to help you decide.

Personally, I would spend the extra $40 ($240 versus $200) and get the L package and forget about the one region M plus the major region which will set you back another $70 (thus a total of $30 more than L option).
This way, you get ALL the US, so if you travel anywhere in the US you can use your software. The maps overlap, so it is easy enough to fit two regions on a 512mb card and simply change the map while in an overlapping state.
Of course, if you NEVER need aany other part of the US and strongly desire the seamless routing in your region, than the major regional would be the way to go for you. Rally, it's all about personal preference. It may seem confusing the way OCN is offering the different options, but if they did it the other way, than everyone would complain about LACK of options!

With Iguidance you select all the states that you will be in during the trip. This works very well as long as you have space on your storage cards. When selecting a waypoint in a state other than your starting point you will have to select that state first before choosing the destination. I use this a lot between Ohio and Michigan and Ontario and it works fine. You'll get map coverage of the US and Canada as well. Plus, you can pick it up for under $95 with free shipping at StorageMedia.com.

I have a lot of good things about iguidance as well. I know both OCN and iguidance (and all other s/w packages) have there positive and negatives. again, it's all a matter of personal preference. :approve:
As a point of clarification, the price listed in the post above was for a bundle from buygpsnow.com that incldued the Globalsat bt-338 gps receiver.

Thanks for your help.
I guess I am really concerned about the east of changing one region to the next in OCN5. For instance, I am planning a trip from Georgia to Ohio. So, i guess I would first need to Plan a route from Georgia to somewhere in Tennessee, and then from Tennessee to Ohio. Can planning these two routes be done ahead of time?? So that all I have to do is just load up the map?? I guess my concern is just how easy it will be to do this.
Also, I have looked at Iguidance and have seen some things that look good, but I have also seen problems with their routing. I am really torn here with what I want to go with.
I have really narrowed it down to OCN5, Iguidance, and TomTom. TomTom is really on the back burner right now so probably either OCN5 or Iguidance. My biggest concerns are accuracy and ease of use.
I can't answer for iguidance as I have never used it. Also, I have not installed my updated OCN5 yet because I am in the process of replacing my Axim, and I want to install it on the new unit. OCN registration ties you to a specific hardware unit.
I have been using OCN4 extensively since May and am pretty darn familiar with the software. Looking at the maps for OCN5, I think I can answer your routing question.
If you had the major central east or major east coast maps, you could route anywhere within that region. (or the seamless USA obviously :rolling: ) If you don't foresee traveling out of that region, that might be the best for you.
Suppose though that you opted for OCN L -- which includes all the smaller regions of US. If you have a 512mb card, you can put two adjoining regional maps on that card. If you wanted to travel from Georgia to Ohio, you would create a route to some point in TN where you know you will be (anywhere along I-75 for instance). Then anywhere in TN when convenient, simply select the new map and pick your final destination. If you have saved route points you can do it on the fly. It may require a restart of the software - OCN4 does. But you should not have to reset the BT connection, just restart OCN if necessary in ver 5).
You can also work offline - that is not connected to the gps and save route points or entire routes. You can also see the mileage and eta for each of the routes so you can see the total trip time by adding the two together (you not the s/w).
I hope this helps. Let me know if you need further clarification. :approve:
