Is there some sort of service cost???

Hello all, I recently purchased a dell axim x50V and i am very interested in setting up GPS on it, however i also ordered a laptop, I ve got to read through all of the threads in here but i thought id throw this out here. Basicall im looking for something that I can use with either my laptop or my Axim, both have the Blue Tooth so im guessing i need to buy a GPS reciever, is there such thing as the same software that will work for both my AXIM and my laptop. Forgive me if this question is dumb but Big time newbie with palm pilots and gps.

Any help would be appreciated TY

First there are no service costs, GPS receivers pick up radio signals from satellites to determine the position of the receiver.

A BlueTooth GPS receiver should work fine for both your laptop and your Axim.

You will need separate software for your laptop and your Axim since they run incompatible operating systems. Some navigation software companies offer separate software for the Pocket PC OS and Windows OS.

For myself, I wouldn't use my laptop as my navigation computer. It would mean that I would have to take my eyes off the road. Now if you had a navigator in the front or back seat that would be something different. But I don't think my wife shares my passion for GPS navigation. I use my laptop for route generation and map loading.

Use your X50 (or x30 in my case) as your navigation guide. Most navigation software running on your x50 will have voice and visual guidance (ie in X yards turn left onto This Street).

As for the BT GPS receiver, I use a Royaltek RBT-1000. I am happy with this since it is fast and sensitive.

Good luck!

The two GPS software suites I've bought have included software for the PC as well as the PPC on the CD/s. I'm not sure if navigation was possible with both because I've only been interested in the PPC portion. But the maps at least are loaded to the PC first to be transfered to the PPC. I'm sure though that there are software suites that willl work for navigation on both the PC and the PPC with the same license/activation codes.

I was waiting for that!

It's amazing how many people refer to ALL handhelds as Palm Pilots.

It's OK, genpatton! Like you said: you're a Big time newbie with Pocket PC's so we'll let it go this time :closedeye ... but next time:

I'm a newbie with Pocket PC's myself, but not with Palm Pilots ;)

That's what makes us different here I guess. Aximsite members love to talk to each other.

Did you already order your GPS system genpatton? Which Operating System will your new laptop use? If it's a Mac or Linux system you might have some problems.

nonono havent ordered the GPS yet, need to save up for a while and do some research to find out which one would best suit my needs (CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP, but works when i need it to). Im going to have to get a case and screen shields and maybe another cradle for work.

My notebook, inspiron 6000 'think its the cheapest model in the series but i guess im not going to be playing games on it or anything too graphically intense.
