I do quite a lot of traveling and am looking for general maps for South America and Asia. I DO NOT need street navigations, just a good general base map that shows basic information such as location of cities, maybe some basic topographical data and basic major freeway info.

I can find MANY maps for the U.S. and Europe which are very detailed but there seems to be a lack of general basemaps for the rest of the world.

Which countries in South America? Do you want the entire continent or just specific countries? Garmin has a reasonable base map for South America but it only has the larger towns and largest highways and is not "routable". I travel to Chile on an annual basis and there is a local GPS software company in Chile that has produced Garman-compatable street routing software that will work in Garmin SteetAtlas units and other Garmin units. But those are only maps of chile and the package costs something like $250 for just the maps.

Your best bet is to consult the world map database that users at the gpspassions forums have compiled. They have a big excel spread sheet you can download that lists every known pda map source worldwide and are constantly updating the list.
