Is there ANY GPS software that allows you to map directions based off own driving ?
Like, none of the TTN5.1 routes are what I actually go through, so is there an option to have the GPS program sort of record where I am going as I am driving and use those directions as my favorite?
I know you can edit routes they calculate, but it's harder doing it that way.
I guess my question is if you already know the best route .. why do you need the route on gps?
I have my gps on most of time in my travels - even in areas I know really well. If I have the routing on, it's kind of interesting to see it re-route when I travel the route that is not the "chosen" one. :approve:
I guess you could always save a bunch of route points in your travels and then route to those one time manually and save the route. (OCN5 it's very easy to save a location ... I assume so in other packages?). you can then set the options to continue automatically to the next route point. This would work, but seems kinda silly for a route you know. My $0.02!

I've thought about exactly the same thing. For example if I am travelling somewhere 200 miles away and need to go on the motorway, I already know how to get to the motorway and don't need the nav app to tell me this, or at least have it tell me the way that I use.
In TomTom you can set waypoints, but I wouldn't like to have to do this for every journey I take. What is really needed is a function to set up known routes, so it can record the route you took to get to a particular location. Then when you set a new route that goes via the known route you set earlier it would tell you the way you normally go, or even better it would have an option to just tell you the summary ("Got to M4 Junction 8") rather than telling me to bear left and then turn right at the end of road I live on.
There's a lot more intelligence that could be easily programmed into the sat nav apps. One other thing that would be useful is if you could set up certain roads as being ones to avoid, because for example you know that there's alwasy lots of traffic and a big queue at the lights.

OCN5, Destinator PN and I think iGuidance all let you block out road you want to avoid.
None of them use your past history to do future planning.
TomTom Navigator 5.10 allows you to re-route based on roads to avoid, tollways, highways, and such. They even have a trial service of Tom Tom Traffic which downloads information to your PPC about upcoming traffic delays and/or accidents--the only downside is, that you most-likely need a cell phone to update the information.
You're right, in TTN 5.1 you can find an alternative route and choose to avoid part of the route it originally calculated for you. I suppose it would be nice if these could be set up and always used, or at least switched on and off when needed.
I shouldn't even be talking about 'nice to have' features, I've only just got TTN so I haven't tried out all the features it has yet, but there are also some very basic things that I don't like about it that I need to learn more about first.
The Tom Tom Traffic looks interesting, I need to get my mobile account enabled for GPRS to try it. Haven't looked into the cost yet, but I don't like having to pay extra for this sort of thing, it would be nice if they just used it as unique feature to set them apart from competitors.
My brother uses a Garmin Palm powered PDA and he claims that it learns from his routes. He says that he has noticed that after about 3 times of him purposely taking a route different to the one first suggested the system then offers him the route he has been taking.
I don't know if I believe him though.
Sounds useful, can't imaginge it would be that hard to implement, it just needs to record the route you took where you deviated from the planned route, and then maybe at the end ask you if you wish to store that as the prefered route. Then in future when it calculates a route that goes via the start and end points of your prefered route it would just use your prefered route for that section.
Mind you, if you look at that amount of bugs that people report with TT I would prefer they made the existing functionality work before they start adding new stuff :)
TBH the routing in TT is far too inflexible anyway, it really could do with some kind of sliding scale between shortest and fastest.

Your brother is correct.
The iQue software I am using has a page for setting or customizing a user's habits. Essentially, it learns the routes you use often.

Cheers.
What software? The iQue 3600 manual doesn't list any where to do that. There are settings for your preferences, but not one for learning routes. You CAN save a route and recall it and next time it will pick up the route from your current location.
I don't think it's compatible with WM5 yet, but OziExplorer CE is a full function mapping program that works great. You have to add your own maps but you can record and track, or plan a route out ahead of time. I use the full version on my laptop.

GPS10..
IQue has a setting under routing to customize your routes, there are several sliders for road types..below this there is a reset button AND user habits(when I hit this it changed the sliders on above and I will see what happens with use)
anyway I never noticed this and I am going to give it a try tomorrow..thanks Lawman
