Just an external reader, mostly USB that has slots for anywhere from 1 to 30some different formats. They tend to move data much faster than activesync.
What is this card reader you all speak of? I have been transferring files via cradle and active sync. I'm feeling a bit prehistoric here.
Something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00064V6RG/sr=8-1/qid=1142619540/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-8896097-9053505?%5Fencoding=UTF8

It allows you to transfer large files noticablly faster than using the cradle.

What made you think that??? You've been around here long enough to know better.
For me, the difference in speed between a 50X and 150X is negligible moving large files to my cards using a card reader. (It could be because my card reader tops out at 10MB/s. ) I drag & drop, however long it takes doesn't really matter (10 seconds vs. 15 seconds)

Therefore, I look for the card that performs best in my PDA. That's where I need the speed.
That is probably because your 2GB 50x is a very fast 50x while your 4GB 150x is a very slow 150x. My slow 4GB 150x Transcend writes large MP3 files at 7MB/s. Don't you have one of those, too? Anyway, 7MB/s is within the performance envelope of a 50x card, although I would expect it to be closer to the 5MB/s mark. I agree that 5MB/s vs 7MB/s is not such a great deal.

Now, a 2GB 150x RiData does almost 11MB/s with MP3s. That is a significant enough difference for me to want high speed cards. With large video files the speed advantage of high speed cards becomes even more pronounced. Especially since videos are files that do not stay on a card for long so copying videos is not a one off operation. View it, delete it, next.

Wait. I know that the card I got reads at 22 MB/sec. Is that relatively fast? I care more about read because I want files to load fast in the Ax.

I have the 2gb A-data 50x watch movies and listen to mp3's and it works flawlessly, not choppy at all. transfer a 600mb movie to it in about 2 min.

Well I am just using my 512 for programs. My 8 gig is for movies/music. I converted my library of 1400 songs to OGG and it is under 4 gigs! I didnt even sacrifice sound quality (or at least I didnt notice). But the speed on microdrives is around 9 MB/sec. write.

The practical throughput is much lower, especially at writing.

Edit: And the fastest I have seen reported in an Axe was around 3.5MB/s from a 4GB Transcend 150x.

Which MD and how did you measure that number?

I bet. 9MB/s is the read speed I get from the 6GB Hitachi; mind you, in a reader not the Axim. The write speed is 2.5MB/s max.
