Looking for a good deal on a repeater
I don't really know if I need a repeater or how I use one, but I just know what it does. My wireless router is on the main floor and 2 computers on the 2nd floor have a none to extremely little signal so I thought a repeater might do the trick to amplify the signal so the 2 computers have a good signal. Does anyone know of have had any past experience of using a repeater and can suggest a good one? Thanks.

You can use an access point to accomplish what you want here. I did a setup for a three story home and came across this also. I bought a wireless access point by the same manufacturer and set it up to basically pick up the signal and rebroadcast it and positioned it so that there were no dead spots.

What brand router do you have?

I can use my Asus WL-HDD as an AP or to extend range.
Other alternatives include use of an external antenna and strategically placing the router so as to maximize signal transmission. Experiment with that.

Access point? I have a Netgear router, and I think I have an old Netgear access point. Would that work? Only problem is that my router is G, and my accesspoint is B.

Using the B access point will make your whole network drop to B.. but then again, so will using your Ax as it is a B only device. Make sure your router is not set to G only or else the B devices won't be able to communicate.

Here is a Netgear AP: http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WG602.php

Sometimes you can just use a second router as an access point... I know the Belkin equipment can do that... and often their routers are cheaper than the APs. I wouldnt suggest mixing manufacturers though.

G is backwards compatble with B as long as your router supports it :approve:

how would i set up a access point? Would I have to connect it to one of my computers or could i just plug power to it somewhere in the house where it would give the best signal?

I am using 3 Linksys with Sveasoft software forming a 11G *ONLY* backbone/meshnet in me house. Then I use a old linksys 11b as my connection for my 2 Axim.

Configuring multiple AP's with the same SSID and same WEP key on differnt channels will also help improve range and roaming. however each AP will require a LAN connection as it is not technicaly doing any repeating.

You might have to plug it in to initially configure it, then you would just place it where it needs to go. In the house I worked on the DSL modem and router were in the basement office and the AP was on the main floor, sitting on top of the refrigerator.

Check out this linksys page: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Promotion_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1121121185858&packedargs=site%3DUS&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

You can look over the setup instructions for the AP and for the range extender.
