AOL Instant Messenger for the Pocket PC. As the above-posts indicate, the US version costs about $20.00, while the UK version (official, in English, and on the AOL United Kingdom/British Web Site) is free and fully functional. And, you get British News Headlines, instead of US, so it's kind of interesting, to boot. :D
AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger and the following extraction from Pocket PC magazine may give you an explanation:
AOL Instant Messenger is by far the most popular online instant messaging software available. As part of America Online's "AOL Anywhere" strategy, versions of their AIM client have been released for popular handhelds, including the Pocket PC! Although the Pocket PC version is stripped down due to limited memory and screen real estate, I was impressed with the amount of functionality that was preserved. You have complete control over font and color of your messages, and the AIM client supports 'smileys' as well. In addition you can communicate with multiple people simultaneously, using a sort of drop down task bar to keep track of conversations. One of the really nice features is that AIM for the Pocket PC will automatically transfer your entire buddy list (created on your desktop PC) to your Pocket PC's memory. I wouldn't feel very good about tapping in all those buddy list screen names one by one. AIM also provides instant access to news headlines and stock quotes from the software's main page. Overall, AOL Instant Messenger 2.0 is a very useful application for communicating on the go.

This doesn't tell me why I am paying for otherwise free software. Thanks for the UK links guys.

Why am I paying for Pocket AIM when it used to be free and is free on any other OS/Platform?
To help pay for AOL's silly merger with Time Warner.
