I'm trying to find a Compact Flash 56K modem card for the Axim X5 with the 400 Mhz chip. I have read an article in PC Magazine that stated that a type I compact flash modem could be used in the Axim. Does anyone know if this holds true, or must you use a type II compact flash modem card only.

It should work just fine. I am currently using a Type 1 compact flash card, so I do not see why a type 1 compact flash modem wouldn't work.

Check out these low power 802.11b + ethernet type1 cf cards www.socketcom.com then compare power consumtpion to all other brands, you pay a bit more but it worh it for the extended battery time.

Quick FYI, primary difference between CF type 1 and CF type 2 is packaging. Type 2 is a thicker package. AXIM slot is Type 2 this means you can use both type 1 or type 2 CF products provided they support Xscale processor. If you have a type 2 card and a type 1 slot then you are out of luck. Axim is I/O heaven since it also has the SD slot so you can put all your assorted files and junk on your SD card, then use the CF slot for all kinds of perifs... GPS, 802.11b, bluetooth, modem, VGA card, capture card, CF camera whatever. Xscale is in other PPCs so support will be for most of these.
