Kingston has their version of a Microdrive - the 5 Gig Datapak on sale for $150 after rebate till the end of the month (August 2003). I have seen that some users own this unit, however, I would like input as to how they like it. On a cost per unit memory basis, this seems hard to beat. The Kingston warrenty is for 3 years. Thanks in advance for any input you may have.....
I love mine. I have the extended battery, so the power use isn't an issue for me. The only problem I have is I don't really like the external factor. It seems like it might get damages easily. I would purchase a sleeve in a second if anyone made one. I acutally used an exacto knife and created a case for mine out of the carrying case the datapak comes in. I would suggest getting it.

Thanks for the reply. One quick question....I see that the card is type II compliant and it looks like the drive will be automatically recognized upon insertion. When you say "external factor", what exactly is the drawback you are referring to? From the Kingston website it seems that the unit seems to slip into the slot and that is it. It may stick out a small amount from the overall length (guessing here as the width and thickness are controlled parameters for the size of the type II slot), if that is what you are referring to...
If it is the overall length, how much does it stick out and how bothersome is this for you....(I guess not much as you say that it is a good buy).
Or am I all wrong here in that this unit has some type of card adapter which inserts into the slot with a separate body which houses the drive. (Does not look like this from the Kingston literature).
So you have a 5GB DataPak "The DataPak, which fits into any Type II PC Card slot, is available in a 5GB uncompressed, formatted storage capacity" in your Axim? A Type II PC Card device in a CF slot??
Note: The DataPak is not a Type II CompactFlash card. Multi-GB CF Cards are going for in excess of a grand and if this were a CF card would be a kick-ass deal.

Ugh...Pulled over by a cop at 2:00 am Eastern time for my imprecise writting. I stand corrected.....as correctly stated by the gentlemen wearing the sidearm, it is a type II compliant device (not card). The questions remain (see above)....
Yes, it is a PCMCIA (aka. PC Card), like what a laptop uses. It is not a CompactFlash card.
This is what Smeg meant by "external factor." This is because in order to use it, you have to have a PCMCIA-to-CF adapter.....which in turn will make the card be outside of the Axim.

Thanks for the clarification deftech. Yes, you have to use an adaptor, like this one, that will allow you to use a PCMCIA card in your CF slot. You have to have a driver for the PCMCIA card (the Kingstons are plug and play, no driver required), and it does sit outside of your Axim. I still think it is worth it though.

There is something that I have been wondering about this method of storage for awhile, as I have never seen a pic of any Axim users with a PCMCIA card inserted. In all of the adapter pics, it appears that it is flexible. Can the card actually fold all the way back.....flat with the back of the Axim? If so, it seems like it might be a quick fix to just stick a small square of velcro between the PCMCIA card and the Axim to keep it from flopping around.

Yeah, they are flexable, and can fold all the way down to the back. I would post a picture, but I don't have any means of taking one. Sorry. For now, I actually cut a slit out of the protective case that the Datapak came in, and inserted the adaptor through it so it can stay in its case when I use it. I thought about using velcro, but I still didn't like the idea of having it out and exposed.

/me scratches head and wonders if it would be able to squeeze into my Piel Frama case while folded back? :D
Doesn't really matter anyhow, as I don't have much of a need for this much storage. But who knows.....might run into a cheap one at a surplus store someday.

My inlaws are here right now, and they have a digital camera, so I managed to get some photos of the hard drive. Now lets see if I can figure out how to post them.
