*** Correction: price is $39.99 plus tax after $40 mail-in rebate, expires 01/01/03.

Guys, check this out:

Circuit City has D-Link DCF-650W - Compact Flash 802.11b wireless card for $39.99 after $40 mail-in rebate.

I have bought one, installed drivers and Axim recognized the card after soft reset. I am planning to go to local Starbucks tonight to try their access point (so-called HotSpot). T-mobile provides free pass for 1-day access for free, if you sign-up for new account (no contract required, can be paid as you go). Next thing will be to get wireless router or Ethernet/wireless bridge for Wi-Fi access at home.

One small problem with D-link CF card: when plugged into Axim it blocks access to headphone connector.

I have the Dlink DCF660W. I use it with my $99 Linksys 11S4 ver2 wireless access point router. The Dlink CF cost $79 from Best Buy and works with 64 or 128 bit encryption.

IT DOES NOT BLOCK OR COVER the HEAD/EARPHONE SLOT ON MY AXIM X4 400MHz pocket. The card is no wider than the CF slot. The Dlink works with Casio E's, HP, Compaq 3600 pockets and even the Sharp running Linux.

I wonder how the encryption works. I have borrowed 2Wire HomePortal 100W router and was able to use my DCF-650W only when WEP (encryption) disabled in both devices. In 2Wire router configuration it is saying that encryption key should be 10 HEX digits. In the D-Link card it is 5 characters. I figured those 10 hex digits should be codes of those 5 characters.. (like string 'ABCDE' would translate to 41 42 43 44 45 in HEX ). But for some reason I could not get it to work. Could you please comment how did you set up your router encryption key?

Just to clear the confusion, the 650W is larger and blocks the headphone port. The 660W does not. I got the 660W at BB for $39.99AR. Works great! :)

I too have the D-Linke DCF-660W and the 660 does not block the headphone jack. It does suck the battery down quick, but i've heard that ALL compactflash wifi cards do that. How much does Starbucks charge? Schlotzkys is free here. CVS pharmacy locations have their wifi wide open, but I dunno if they're on the internet.

I use a NetGear MA701 wireless CF card and connect at work via a Compaq A/P or at home via a NetGear A/P and it works great. Also not blocking the headphone jack. I use it to sync with my work PC and my home PC and to access the internet from both places. I never use the cradle anymore.

It looks to me like the D-Link DCF-660W has a higher power consumption (350mA) than the Linksys WCF12 at 250mA. Both are Type I, both have power management software to lower consumption when not in use. Amazon has the Linksys for $53.54 after a $10 rebate.
