Dell TrueMobile 1180 CF Maker/OEM
Anyone know who fabs the Dell TrueMobile CF card for Dell? I have a bunch of their PCMCIA cards that are just rebranded Lucent/Orinoco/Proxim gold cards, but I wasn't aware that also made CF cards - (does anyone make a Hermes based CF card?)
More to the point, has anyone gotten PocketWarrior to work with the Dell CF card?
I got the Axim and the Dell card as a gift, so I'm not really in the position to get another CF card at the moment.
Totally unrelated - I've got a Linksys WPC11 (v3) PCMCIA 802.11b card with the box, the drivers, case. It's been used like 3 times - I needed a card that would accpet an external antenna. I think they are like 50 bucks at the moment. I'm happy to part with it for $25/plus shipping. Email me if you are interested.

I'ma tool
Replying to my own posts. The 1180 looks like it might be a Broadcom chipset card. Can anyone confirm?

Akron, Ohio-based AiroNet isn't going away. The wireless networking provider, which Cisco agreed to acquire in November, will continue to produce PC networking cards and access points for Dell, but under the PC maker's brand name.

Interesting - all the TrueMobile PCMCIA mini pci stuff I've seen is made by Lucent/Orinoco/Agere/Proxim. I'd hate to think that supply of dirt cheap supply of TM1150/Orinoco golds was going to dry up on eBay...
Say, Flaming Homer, are you checking to see if the TM1180 will work with pocketwarrior?

BROADCOM does not make cards...
BROADCOM does not make cards (yet)... they DO provide designs to Asian contract manufacturers that build the cards for the benefit of a third parts, like Dell for example. Broadcom has not released a production CF design to a contract manufacturer... but they may be selling chips to any number of second parties that are building cards. Trust me - I know. I do not know who is making the 1180 card for Dell... but I will bet money it is from a MAJOR contract manufacturer based in Taiwan... Drivers are based on a core from Broadcom (if it has a Broadcom chipset in it), but may be heavily modified by other parties.

According to the FCC
Finally got the card (still no Axim) so I could look up the following:
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/oet/forms/reports/Search_Form.hts?mode=Edit&form=Exhibits&application_id=910298&fcc_id=IXMCF114100
Its a Hermes - like all other Orinoco stuff
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=272655&native_or_pdf=pdf
Made by a company called Training Research Company out of Taiwan.

I actually found information that this was made by Wistron NeWeb(http://www.wneweb.com.tw/). It appears as if they manufacture/design many products for other companies to rebrand. The reason I sought this information was in search of Windows 9x/2K/XP drivers. Using the TrueMobile 1180 802.11b CF and a SanDisk CF to PCMCIA adapter, I actually got this card to work! I found the drivers needed at: http://www.wneweb.com.tw/support/download/warplink802/WLAN_1.3_0809.zip
Hope this is great news for everyone looking to same some cash on hardware accessories!

Um, what did you need the adapter for? Are you using the card in something other than your Axim? If you are using it in a laptop, might I suggest hitting ebay and getting a used Orinoco (or one of its rebrands - Dell TM 1150, Avaya, Proxim, etc) You can get a Dell TM 1150 for around $35 US and it has a stonger internal antenna, can use netstubmler and has the ability to accept an external antenna...

I think the card works fine for folks. We're just trying ot find out the chipset to see if we can get it to work with various stumbler programs.
So, with baited breath, when you installed the above drivers, did the card work with pocketwarrior?
Thanks!

Yes, I was interested in using the CF card on my laptop for home use. Well, I hope this still was a decent pointer for you on the chipset information you are seeking.

Thanks!
Sorry I neglected to say thanks in my previous post. I couldn't find anything on the site you pointed out regarding the chipset. But based on the FCC docs I mentioned earlier, it looks like its a Hermes based card. (So when my damn Axim arrives later today I'll be giving ministumbler a shot)
But with the driver you installed on you axim, have you tried any of the ppc stubmler proggies - pocketwarrior, ministumbler, boingo or winc? Those of use with the tm 1180 would love to know!
Thanks - m

Not Hermes... USI.
I looked at some of the FCC docs; the users manual is branded 'USI'. USI (Universal Scientific Inc. in Taipei) is a large contract manufacturer. They build lots of stuff for Dell; on a 'third party basis. Here is how it works: Someone has a design and offers it to Dell. The design is 'given' to a contract manufacturer (USI, G-Com, Celestica...). The CM builds the product after receiving a PO from Dell. The design can be 'owned and controlled' by the CM, or Dell, but most likely by the design house that did the original design. Regulatory certs (like FCC) can be in Dells name, but are usually in the name of the CM or design house that warrant the performance of the product.

fcc docs
If you look at this link
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/...tive_or_pdf=pdf
which i found using the cards fcc id#, it looks like the thing is a hermes chip.
interestingly enough, if you read some of the mail that went back and forth, (find it https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w..._id=IXMCF114100) it looks like the card was emitting too much signal and had to be tuned down....any oclockers out there?
at long last tho my axim shows up tonight so i get to fiddle with it.
