I know it is difficult being in Canada, right across the border from our big friends, and having to pay not only a horrible exchange rate, but also duty and GST.
So I thought I'd post this here to say STOP! Unless you're ordering directly from Dell, just stop buying stuff through sites that are based outside of Canada - at least until you check:
http://www.handheldcanada.com/
They have almost everything you could think of for the Axim, heck they even have WriteShields!
Try them, and THEN think about checking:
http://www.ecost.com/ecost/ecsplash/
(They're registered with the Canada Post service - BorderFree)
They don't have a large selection of stuff for the Axim, but given time they might.
Hope this helps someone! I'll post more URLs when I find them :)
I know - I have no idea why, but it mostly seems really high on items such as memory. I'm going to email them, maybe they have some sort of explanation.
It's time like this that it sucks to be in Canada. Even with the exchange rate getting better (thanks again for that info! ;)) there are still idiotic duty and GST charges (I'm ordering from the states so I don't HAVE to pay taxes, darn it! ;)) on just about anything you order.
Maybe we need to band a bunch of Canucks together and make a PPC online shopping site that actually has decent prices?
Nick

hehe hear ya :P great US deals are everywhere, but canada just seems so dead. I've been buying from the states mostly as well.
just bought a 2 in 1 sync/charge cable for the axim from moonlight-technologies for $5.99 US plus $6 shipping to canada
the CC company charged me at 1.5514 exchange rate. so it came out to only 19 bucks canadian. which is pretty decent.
1.55 on the exchange rate? The Bank of Canada rate is down to 1.4654 as of last night...that seems unreasonably high for them to charge. Not that it makes much diff on a small purchase, but what's the point of an exchange rate if they aren't going to honour it?

wow, it's 1.46 now?? :crooked: sweet
but keep in mind the 1.55 was like a month ago.. when the bank of canada exchange rate was around 1.51. so it's probably much lower now.
Just ordered a memory card from handheldcanada I found the price to be not that bad. $103.00 cdn for a 256mb CF and best thing is it was not a Sandisk. For $138.00 including GST I got the card and adapter for $138.00 and no shipping charge. The price I found in the USA was at Amazon but they were not shipping to Canada.
I hope I don't start something here but I just want to tell all my US friends that unlike our great (tongue in cheek) prime minister I support all efforts for everyone in Iraq.As a frequent visitor to your great country I must say this is not one of my prouder moments as a Canadian.....Thanks
Just to give you guys some info when ordering from eCost using the Border-Free service:
1)while they advertise free shipping, this is only for the US leg of the ride up North. Shipping (small amount) is charged for the Canadian leg, as are the custom broker & freight forwarder fees. You'll see the final tab after you input all your shipping details.
2) As I am just learning this week, they do not have a replacement program for Canadian customers. Either the item must be returned to the broker's warehouse in Windsor, ON, after which eCost will issue a refund and you must then reorder the item (if purchased <30 days before request), or you must deal directly with the manufacturer for an exchange/replacement of good after the first 30 day period.
Barring these 2 points, they do still have competitive prices, and would be even more if they used a more realistic exchange rate. My experience with their service was adequate.
Other online handheld stores I tried out was www.insight.ca and www.cendirect.com. The latter has free shipping from what I remember and their prices were quite reaonable for the most part.
I bought my 256Mb Sandisk SD card from ECost.com a couple of months ago for about CDN$140 including duties and shipping. It is a good price, but shipping for larger stuff (i.e. card readers) was way too high and not really worth it.
