dont want to face compatibility, firmware, mount issues. Off-shelf product (and from Axim vendor Dell) is less pain. just my opinion. Thnx for referring the links. let me educate myself on GPS. This site is just GREATTTT!.
You won't fact compatibility, firmware or mount issues if you use some other GPS software/reciever. The Axim works perfectly fine with all GPS products. And anyways, Dell as such does not make any GPS related product. Their GPS receiver is a re-branded version of Fortuna GPS. Their GPS software is a re-branded version of something between iGuidance V1 and iGuidance V2.
Read the tutorial that JakeRich has written since that will give you a very good idea of how GPS system works.
Read up on GPS receiver and software reviews written by JakeRich. Again that will give you an idea of what are the pros and cons for each package.
Go to www.gpspassion.com and read up on the reviews/forums out there.
For recievers, there are various kind of recievers like SirfII, xTracV2, SirfIII, etc. You can mix-match nearly any kind of reciever with any kind of GPS software. The only condition is that both of them should communicate using NMEA protocol, which nearly everyone does (except perhaps Garmin).
As for software, IMHO, you can find better GPS software than Dell for the same or less price. Browse through the GPS forum and you will find lots of information on what is good and bad in a particular software. There is NO ONE software that is the best. Every software has its pros and cons, and you have to pick up the software that matches your needs/requirements.
If you don't have neither a reciever nor software then perhaps it is cheaper to get a bundle package from www.buygpsnow.com or www.semsons.com.
