Wireless CF card
For those in the Toronto area thats interested in buying a wireless CF card I found Logic Computer House (www.logiccomputerhouse.com) listing a Linksys WCF12 for $99.

I peronally had difficulty locating stores selling wireless cf cards and had to buy mine through ebay (got mine for $97 including shipping, no taxes). Futureship currently does not sell it and Bestbuy has the Belkin cf card at a whopping $190.

I believe NCIX.com is also selling the Netgear CF card for $109 Canadian plus taxes plus shipping.

Or, you can try www.ecost.com. I think they also have the Netgear CF card for $61 US. After conversion and shipping and handling charges I think it comes to about $115-120 Canadian. Be careful of any rebate offers on this site as most of them are for US customers only.

Agent Smith,

I went to Logic Computers today to buy my wireless CF card but they were sold out!!! They said I could order one but I had to put down an unrefundable deposit on it. I decided against it since I didn't even know if it would fit well (i.e., would it cover up the headset jack?).

Oh well, I will keep looking.

I did a little more digging, not really actually, just went to the Compusmart website and they show 3 different wireless CF cards for sale.

They have the D-Link DCF660W
http://www.compusmart.com/product.asp?CatalogID=0&SupplierPartID=079058

The Linksys WCF 12
http://www.compusmart.com/product.asp?CatalogID=0&SupplierPartID=498049

And, the Sandisk SDWCFB-000-768 (didn't know they made wireless CF cards)
http://www.compusmart.com/product.asp?CatalogID=0&SupplierPartID=321500

The first two retails for $119.99, the last one goes for $149.99.
Personally, I think they're overpriced but what you can do is buy from them first to see if you like it and learn how to use it. Then return it and buy it elsewhere that sells it cheaper but doesn't offer a refund. I'm pretty sure Compusmart offers a 30 day refund policy.
Actually, change that, I just read off their website that they will charge 15% restocking fee for any opened hardware but will honor a 7 day refund.

I'll try and check for more stores that carries cf cards.

Thanks for the links Agent Smith. Later today, I went back to Logic Computers and ordered the Linksys one. I checked around with some other "cheap" computer stores (e.g., Canada Computer) and Logic still turned out to be cheaper. I also check on Linksys' website and the card looked like it should fit fine (fingers crossed).

The card should arrive in a few days. I can't wait to try out everything!!!:D

I'm sure it will fit fine. I think the only CF card that blocked the headphone jack was the Belkin.
Did you get the Netgear router from Futureshop?
I have been using my router and wireless CF card the past few days and it's a blast. I've been hanging out on my deck surfing the net, reading the news while eating breakfast, and listening to mp3s stored on my computer through my Axim.
That last thing just blows me away. :D
Let me know when you set up how you're doing. If you run into any problems just post it here and I'm sure you'll get lots of help.

Oh yes, I got the Netgear router (Weston Rd. & 401 Futureshop). So sad that it's just sitting there still in its box!!!

Wow, sitting outside using your Ax sounds great! Have you checked out the Hotspots in TO yet?

You can still set up your router. You just won't have another device to hook into it. But, at least you'll know its working.
Just yesterday I was bbqing and surfing between food checks. It's pretty cool.
I haven't checked any hot spots but find they're mostly downtown and I live uptown so it's a bit of a drive.

But how can I really tell the router is working if there is nothing else networked to it? I will try setting it up tonite anyhow...

It looks like I will have to wait even longer for my wireless CF card. Logic Computers called and said there has been a delay from the supplier - 4 to 5 business days now!!!

Part of knowing your router works is that you should still be able to access the internet. I am currently running into a problem with accessing my email. I think it has something to do with the built in firewall but I'm hoping the people on Aximsite can offer suggestions.
Thats unfortunate you have to wait longer for your cf card. I originally had the cf card first and then went out to buy the router. The only good thing in my case was that a router was a lot easier to buy then a cf card.
If you really can't wait to surf you could buy the belkin from Best Buy for now and then return it later. Or, just sit back and relax and wait for your cf card. ;)

CompuSmart policies
I had the same difficulty securing a CF wi-fi card here in Montreal, and ended up buying a Linksys WCF12 from CompuSmart in store for $119.00 & taxes , as I didn't want to wait the wait with e-shopping (although with eCost I could have had it for $118canadian, shipping duty and tax included).

First of all, the CompuSmart (in-store) receipt clearly indicates "no refund, all sales final". There is a bunch of small print (restocking charges, open box, etc) for on-line orders, so read carefully.

Secondly, they do not honor their price match guarantee - I went in with 2 e-shopping ads, in Canadian funds, which including shipping & taxes came out cheaper than CompuSmart's price. The clerk and asst-manager refused to honor thier policy, coming up with a multitude of excuses, some making no sense whatsoever. Strike 1

Also, the 'in-store' price listed on their website (when you use the 'buy in store' links) is not the actual price: the website listed the WCF12 at $119.00 for in-store OR web purchases, when I showed up in store the sticker was at $129.00. I had to argue my point for a good 15 minutes with the clerk, pointing out that $119 is their advertised price, store and web. Finally they took the $10 off, but what a headache! Strike 2

And to finish, I wrote them to complain about not honoring their own store price policy, and explained the situation. I received a nice reply, that the store manager & president will be forwarded my email and to expect an answer from them...well, that answer never came, I wrote them a 2nd email, that too has gone ignored. You guessed it, strike 3.

So, not only did they lose my business after only 1 sale, but they have also lost my potential future business, and all the positive word of mouth referrals I would have made. DO I have a beef with them: ya, if you decide to implement 'best price & service or we'll match it' to ensure full customer satisfaction, and then choose to ignore the customer and not respect anything that the policy states, I find that to be very misleading to the consumer, and it is becomes gross misrepresentation on their part.

So my word to the wise is to be aware of what's out there, shop around, and read the policies carefully.

Buyer beware! You can find better deals elsewhere, and hopefully they will be more geared to keeping a clinet happy.

Ok, l vented ...phew!
;)

That sucks. I'd print this thread out and send it to the manager - with a note explaining there are 10,000 members ! But that's just me...

Here's a good price for a type-1 unit made by Trendnet and available at TigerDirect.ca for only $89.99 (although you'll have to add shipping at about $9.00 (I think - don't have my receipt in front of me at the moment...)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=524587&Sku=T156-2010
Anyway, I just ordered one of these and haven't received it yet - so I cannot give a review yet.

For those of you who are interested, the LinksysWCF12 does fit into the Dell Axim X5 without blocking the headphone jack, however I found that the fit was very snug along the edges. It works well, though as I'm sure it's been mentioned in a myriad of other threads, it does drain the battery noticably faster than the Axim running on it's own, but that's true for most WiFi cards.

I bit the bullet and picked up the Socket from handheldcanada.com. I couldn't find it anywhere else up here. :-/
