USB host control T-mobile AMEO?
Having just sold my Dell Axim x51v to buy the T-mobile AMEO i was surprise to learn that the USB synchronisation and charging connection port wouldn't allow me to use my mains and battery powered 2.5 inch external hard drive caddy?

Granted I had to use the Ratoc USB host CompactFlash adapter on the Dell but foolishly I took it granted that the HTC/T-mobile 2007 model with USB host connectivity a standard!

Does anyone know of any USB mini B USB solution will allow me to use I external portable hard drive? or am I going to have to wait for a wireless Bluetooth solution?

Any thoughts appreciated

Matthew Miller of the mobile gadgeteer blog on ZDNet repoted success using a MacBook harddrive in a USB enclosure with the optional 4 in 1 cable for the HTC Advantage. He wasn't impressed the transfer speed though. The 4 in 1 cable is available from MobilePlanet and costs just over $25. I plan to order one just for the S-video output option

HTH.

Fan-daby-dozy - thank you - I knew I'd read it somewhere that this thing had USB host capabilities. My reply from T-mobile stated that it wasn't possible to give them the heads up about this particular 4 in 1 solution.

I think Garraway with the transfer speeds because the AMEO uses the same processor that the Dell x51v and that seemed to be okay in music and video playback due to the offer size in the various players.

I'll report back with the result with my Seagate 149 GB external hard drive portable solution that worked fine with my Dell x51v.

I've tried the 4:1 cable with various media

thumbdrive (4gb) - works fine
SD, or CF card in multi-reader - works fine (tried 1-2gb models i had laying around)
keyboard & mouse (usb) via un-powered mini-hub - both worked fine at same time, including mouse pointer
portable HD (wolverine MVP - 60gb) - no go .. would be seen 1 in 5 times by os, but only dir tree, never any files.

Hi guys

Sorry about the delay in replying a million and one issues including my main PC needing a rebuild! My 4in1 cable finally arrived from eXpansys UK. I only seem to be able to get VGA out, I haven’t tried composite or S. Video, but my worry is that not one of my USB devices works with this cable. Looking through the instruction will there is no mention that USB host control needs to be unable in Windows mobile six so I take it then it should be just plug and play?

These are devices I have tried,
1. Seagate 2.5 inch hard drive in an external mains and battery powered caddy OTG (model number: ME-600 OTG)
2. Mitsumi USB floppy and memory card reader (model number: FA401)
3. Generic/Standard 3.5 inch hard drive in an external mains powered caddy (TT-346 U2)
4. Gigabyte Bluetooth USB dongle (model number: GN-BTD 02)
5. Sony VAIO mini UMPC foldable USB keyboard (model number: VG P-KBC 1)

The above were just for testing purposes except the first USB Seagate hard drive OTG battery powered caddy which is my priority is I had this working on my Dell Axim via the Ratoc CF card to USB host controller adapter.

Azcaddman, I’m going to follow your lead so can you tell me what multi card reader model you are using with success? Also which make and model number of thumb drive was working as I’ve never needed a thumb drive because the Seagate 2.5 inch hard drive was in effect my thumb drive?

And we all using the T-mobile AMEO as I’m not sure if this is a repeatable issue with the HTC 7500/7501 models? My T-mobile AMEO should be running on WM5 but the person I bought it off had upgraded to WM6, which seems to be working flawlessly?

I want to understand this problem so I was thinking of starting off a spreadsheet with the make and model numbers of peripherals that work and don’t work, does anybody else think this is a good idea at I just give up with this and wait for SSD in USB caddies to become less expensive? Also I hear that there is a cf card caddy that allows you to interlink /daisy chain will to pull cf cards?

I’m going to start another thread named “T-mobile AMEO/ HTC 7500/7501 USB host working hardware database”. First and will run a poll to see how many people think it is good idea or a bad idea you to whatever technical knowledge they have as to why USB devices should work or not work on any of these smart PDA phones.

I guess the poll should be called “ Do we need a database of USB host devices that worked for the T-mobile AMEO/ HTC 7500/7501?”
Anyway let me know what you think.

thanks Optical10

I got my 4 in 1 cable and so far using a generic USB mouse hasn't been a problem. My Sandisk 8 in 1 card reader worked well with SD cards but didn't work with a 6GB microdrive. My Neuros 442 PMP was recognized as a hard disk but I didn't see any files come upin the stock file explorer. I'm going to try a more robust file explorer like Resco or Total Commander before I give up on powered harddrives.

Update:
I hooked up my cable to a ginormus Microsoft ergonomic keyboard and it worked great. None of the built-in launch buttons worked but that's probably because that keyboard was designed for a PC running a full Windows operating system.

HTC technical support call
hello all

I've just made a call to HTC UK technical department who have asked me to send them a summery of this issue so they can start to look into it. I have a reference number of the call with a very helpful front-line technician who said that the e-mail I send them would be forwarded to the development team also.

He briefly mentioned that WM6 may also be playing a part in the intermittent successful/unsuccessful USB connectivity issues, so the developers have to factor that scenario into the lack of power that the HTC advantage/T-mobile AMEO battery is supplying to the cable.

Anyway I will obviously keep you informed any correspondence and developments of this issue in this thread.

HTC technical hotline Official Response
As per my last contribution to this thread here is the e-mail I received from HTC technical in its entirety,
"Dear Mr ...,

We have received some information from our developers regarding your query about 4 in1 cable.

We have been confirmed that it is compatible with USB key boards, USB mice, Card readers, and Thumbdrives (usually up to 1GB).

All the devices mentioned above must be low powered devices in order to work with HTC Advantage (T-Mobile Ameo).

We have been also confirmed that USB hard drives with external power supplies should also work, however it is not guaranteed one make may work another may not. Same applies to Thumbdrives. We are still expecting more technical and descriptive information however at the moment this information has not been yet disclosed to us.

Thank you for your enquiry, Should you have any other problem, please do not hesitate to call us. Your Local number can be found at HTC: Support: Customer Services: By phone:

Best regards,

HTC Europe
callservice@htceurope.com
http://www.htc.com"

So it seems that it is hit and miss as to whether your low powered USB hard drive will work with this cable according to this response!

If anybody has had success with specific manufacturer card readers/photography banks /external hard drive caddies which are also battery powered or in fact any USB devices PLEASE LET US KNOW IN THIS THREAD so I can start so I can start a database of working USB devices I make and model number.

Thanks for sharing optical10. I'll test the powered drive I have and report the results here. I just have the find the silly thing and it's power adapter and cables. I've been moving into a new apartment over the last few weeks and don't really have my tech gear all in order.

Success!!!
I have today successfully connected the Seagate 160GB 2.5 inch laptop hard drive (Seagate Momentous 5400.3 160 GB 2.5 HDD mod# ST9160821A) To My HTC Advantage / T-Mobile AMEO via the 4-in-1 USB cable.

I had to use a Digimate III /(3) HIGH SPEED Portable Photo Bank & Card Reader 2.5 inch hard drive caddy / enclosure with battery or mains power that I bought here on eBay Digimate III Portable Card Reader & Photo Bank Silver on eBay, also Other Multiple Format Readers, For Multiple Formats, Digital Memory Card Readers, Photography (end time 14-Feb-08 22:05:50 GMT) , this was the only place I could find it minus the hard drive. The bonus with this particular hard-driving closure is that it also includes a 12 one card reader and did I say that it was hi speed USB 2.0 as well and it even works on Macs.
I was able to access 17,000 MP3s to my Windows mobile media player library via the HTC advantage/T-Mobile AMEO whilst connected to the Digimate III /(3) HIGH SPEED Portable Photo Bank & Card Reader. Hope the solution works for the rest of you as I can’ t see why it wouldn’t. So once again I have what I call the iPod/iPhone beater courtesy of the 160 GB capacity, sometimes life is sweet  enjoy.
