In a similar vein, I've noticed some peculiarities with TomTom 6 on my X7501:
1. I have been so far simply unable to install the actual program from the DVD. The PocketPC version keeps returning an installation unsuccessful message. It didn't matter if I chose the 8GB drive or internal memory...the result was always the same.
Workaround: Locate the ttn.ppc.6.010.cab on the DVD (at least 6.010 is the version I have), and extract the cab. You should see a folder like 2577. Copy the ttn.cab to your device and run that cab, and TomTom Navigator should install without a hitch. Now you can install the Maps.
2. Originally I had installed the North America maps to the internal 8GB drive, but recently got a 4GB SDHC card and reinstalled the maps there. Everything worked well until I did a soft reset. Once I did this, TomTom couldn't locate the maps and returned a "No maps found!" message, with my only option being to exit from TomTom. The problem seems to be that TomTom 6 may be getting confused with the presence of the internal drive and the storage card. My less-than-elegant workaround is to eject the storage card, soft-reset, and once the device boots reinsert the storage card and then run TomTom. So far this has worked for me every time.
