Dear all
Has anyone install Logmein on the HTC and access remotely a PC/MAC?
Do I need to install the logmein software on the HTC AND also on the PC? I am new with this and I am so grateful if someone can point me the right way. Cheers and thanks in advance
I use it on my X51v. First install the client on the desktop. Then go to logmein on your pda, login and when you tray to connect to the desktop it should ask you if you want to install the remote control software. Do that and then you should be all set.
i dont understand why people use this stuff. just set up a secure vnc connection over a secure tunnel through ssl or something. easy free and fast. using a 3rd party makes everything so INsecure to me. your at the mercy of their security. i wouldnt ever want anyone else but me to be able to have control over my systems. im sorry, this kind of software just makes me mad

While there is a certain amount of truth to this, do you think setting up a dynDNS account, installing something like cygwin on a system, setting up a vnc server, opening up firewall ports for ssh traffic, then getting a ssh and vnc client on your mobile device is easier (for Windows)? I've done this, and also set up vpns on my home network, and experimented recently with logmein, and so far logmein is the easiest and most convenient tool for remote control from my pdas, and the scaling of the desktop on my pdas is very handy. Perhaps not the most secure compared to some DIY solutions (if you're really tech-saavy), but much simpler for the average user by along shot. Are there security issues, sure...but there are/have been with cygwin and putty as well.
For those curious, here is their whitepaper on logmein security, and this is their security features comparison. O'Reilly did a review back in 2005 here, and Google likely can show other reviews/info.

The Following User Says Thank You to breley For This Useful Post:
im a net admin during the day and i graduated with an emphasis in computer and network security. i know better than to use a middle man when dealing with COMPLETE AND TOTAL control and ownership of a box or network, and i would hope others would see the liability here.
i understand the ease of use thing, but vnc and ssl isnt that hard to set up. theres tons of how tos out there how to do this...

langtran, simply create an account on logmein's site, click the confirmation link in the email, and on the system you want to control, install the program (the website should prompt you), and when you log in via pocket IE on your mobile device you will be prompted when you login to install the app/plugin.
jdigitL, believe me, I understand where you are coming from...I do network admin too so I'm acutely aware of compromising systems and networks. However, in the rariefied world of IT it's very easy to lose sight of the fact that what is easy for us isn't true of a lot of home users out there. Besides, if most people knew what was good for them they'd use linux or maybe Macs and not touch Windows in the first place...

i agree. i just wanted to note that there were other things out there. options that, although more "complicated" or involved, may be better and more secure
dear all,
thanks for security warning. But this is great. I tested it and the software works fine. I was on 3G so it is somewhat slow. However, on a fast broadband, it is likely to e faster. The fact that it runs at all is fascinating enough. And it is free.
thanks for the advise,
I got stuck in an endless loop with Logmein. Every time I logged in from the 7501, I was asked to download the ppc program. I already had it installed, but replaced it 3 times. I was able to see the desktop, which was online. When I clicked on the desktop, however, I was always returned to the download the ppc program.
Does it matter where it is installed on the 7501? Device, storage or microdrive? I believe I tried all 3 places and was never able to get beyond the login. I am now trying out PCMobilizr, which also works on my BlackBerry - although the screen is too small to make it really useable.
Were you trying to use it with the "default" browser, Opera Mobile? In my few tests Opera wasn't working properly for me, but had no trouble with PIE. I'm not sure if Opera Mobile is supported yet.

You are right, I was using Opera, since I am so used to just pressing that button next to the screen. I will try again using IE. Apparently, I also tried Logmein last or the year before year, and that trial had expired. I d/n actually remember trying it, but when I gave my email address, I already existed. Maybe that is also causing issues? I deleted that computer from the profile, but still had the same endless loop problem.
Has anyone experienced this when using AT&T network?
I was able to install Logmein, and using PIE, was able to get through and see my desktop on the Advantage. However, when I clicked to activate and go to a remote session, I keep getting dumped back to the log in page. I called Logmein support, who told me this is a problem with AT&T network. Specifically, MediaNet. Apparently if I disbale the proxy for MediaNet, I will be able to access my computer through Logmein.
I was sent a file to disable the proxy. Here is the message from Logmein. I was impressed that they would offer this support, since I am only running the Free version right now.
"Hi ,
Some of our users have experienced problems connecting to their PCs over AT&T's network. After clicking on your PC from the My Computers page, it may require you to log in to LogMeIn.com again, and may repeat this process several times, before allowing you access. This is due to the proxy server that AT&T's Media Net service utilizes.
Instead of connecting through AT&T's network, try connecting to a WiFi access point. This will make AT&T's proxy irrelevant, as you'd be using a different means of connectivity. You should not experience this problem when connecting this way.
If using WiFi is not an option, there is a way to stop your phone from using the proxy. If you have a program called Proxy Manager in your Pocket PC's programs folder, then you may use that. If you do not have that program, then you may download the zip file attached. Extract the zip file on your PC and move the two CAB files to your Pocket PC. Open ProxyOff.CAB on your Pocket PC to disable the proxy or open ProxyOn.CAB to enable the proxy.
Please be advised that turning the proxy off will disable all AT&T Media Net features. With the proxy disabled, you should not be able to access http://device.home/ from your mobile device. If you are able to open that page, the proxy is still enabled.
I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
I am using logmein now. I am impressed enough to think about buying a server just to access remotely. I find the screen refreshing on the HTC slow. Is it your experience as well? How can we speed up the screen refreshing?
Cheers
