I played around with RealVGA for a little bit, but it didn't seem to play nice with SPB Pocket Plus.

I've been looking at all the stuff at XDA developers but they don't explain stuff too well. For example, what's a kitchen and how will it benefit me? They have files all over the place and it seems like a mess. But some of that stuff looks great. I just have no idea how to implement it and how to choose what files I should upload.

I have installed RealVga but it's not a big deal for me.
I have been following the exploits of the rom cookers
on xda also and your right their threads have become
convoluted with no clear and easy way to do the process
at least for newcomers.
It appears that the thrust of the rom changes is to
put all your favorite apps and reg hacks into rom instead
doing it piecemeal.
I am interested to see where it leads but at this point in
time I don't need an expensive paperwieght,I keep both
the 51v and 7501 sleek and trim by managing software
and overhead.
A kitchen by the way as far as I define it is the person/persons
who "cook" up these roms.
Your right some of the apps are neat so I try them as standalones
and if the uniqueness wears off or they cause me problems I ditch them.

I have the same feeling after going to XDA. Some of the stuff looks great, but there are a lot of posts about bricked Advantages. Since I have no idea what most of those downloads would do for me, I have avoided them all.

When I got my first converged device (Samsung i730), I went nuts. Reg edit, changed the volume default, skins, display. If there was a download, I tried it.

Then it began. People said they could not hear me when I was on the phone. Then it would just freeze up. Then the screen got squiggly lines. Basically, I think I killed it.

With my 7501 I have only put on programs that:
1. I understand what they are supposed to do (SBSH Weather and Pocket day, LogMeIn); and

2. Are tried out and have been around. (Softmaker Office Suite; OneNote Mobile-which stinks, by the way). I do not even download Beta versions.

No mods for me! I rely on this device too much. I like reading about them every now and then, however.

For those looking at the "weird and wonderful" stuff on the XDA site, has any software or drivers come along that allow use of the ATI graphics chip? It seems that this has been a common complaint about the 7501 - slow video playback compared to "inferior" devices like the Axim or even HX4700.

I quite agree with the video playback issue.

This "class action" site was a very interesting website I came across while referencing gylman's post. The class action site was referenced at ZDnet in discussing this issue. For those interested, the ZDnet thread can be found here.

Interesting because apparently our sister site, Tiltsite, also ran an article about that issue as it related to the TyTN II.

I tend to be in meadowlark's camp. While there are some quirks with the X7501, I'm not sure I feel comfortable with excessive modding as it applies to the hardware/ROM. And I too wish XDA Developers was more efficiently laid out, with condensed HOWTOs for some of those ridiculously long threads about ROM/Radio cooking.

On a totally unrelated note, Chris Miller recommends to current X7501 owners regarding the X7510 that

You will note in my conclusion that I recommended that existing Advantage owners think twice before upgrading because IMHO it isn't worth the price and you actually lose a bit with the hardware buttons and accelerometer losses.

Breley, that was very helpful! I was not aware of the full extent of HTC issues with video.

It looks like my Advantage purchase plans are on hold to if and until the problems are addressed. Until then my HX4700 will continue to rule the roost. Hard to believe I bought it nearly 4 years ago, and there is no compelling reason to get a new device, at any price, even now.
