Wait for WM6 pre-installed or buy now?
Aside from the risk of cingular potentially charging for the upgrade to WM6, are there any downsides to buying it now and then upgrading? (aside from having to completely erase the config and any prefs I've setup)?

Thanks,
Mike

I beg to differ. In updating the ROM on any device you run the risk of bricking it. I currently have a Dell Axim x51V & updated the ROM about 6 months ago. I personally didn't have any problems but other people had horror stories of their device turning into a paper weights. Dell released WM5 for the Axim 50V from all of the reports that was a disaster too. However upgrading to WM6 should be that big of a change from WM5 but personally I would wait. Purchase something with WM6 perloaded. It may save a lot of headaches in the long run.

The only question is how long is it going to take Cingular & other carriers to start shipping devices with WM6. It took several months with WM5.

Thanks. I decided to wait for the HTC Kaiser which is supposed to be out in June, and maybe on cingular 2-3 months later. It sports a 3MP camera, GPS and a swivel/up screen:

Burning the ROM is as easy as installing any new software on your hermes.. There are is a new boot loader available over at XDA-developers.com caller HardSPLv7 ... it makes flashing roms very easy and safe(r).

I'm running a version of WM6 on my SPV m3100 Caller Black Dymond, and to be honest unless the M$ "official" release of Wm6 is outstanding I'm staying with my black.

Check out the following link Windows Mobile 6 - Black Dymond 3.5

I'm planning to get an HTC TyTN from my provider (Rogers) and they sell it under that name with the HTC logo still on the front. Does this mean I can use the official WM6 upgrade from HTC's website?

you COULD use whatever ROM you want, just look to see if there is a ROM posted that has a settings CAB for your provider.

For example, most of the ROMS are posted at XDA-Devs with AT&T settings built in

Thanks. I'll be completely new to ROM kitchens when I get my device. I've seen the Wiki for the Hermes but it's still a pretty tall order (or looks to be) to flash my ROM.

At this point rather than investing in a 8525, wait for the 8925.

I would LOVE to get an HTC Kaiser (ATT 8925), JohnDoe. But my carrier (Rogers) is slow as molasses. I don't care about 3G or anything like that -- I just want a good, solid WM device. The Kaiser's 128 MB of RAM sound fantastic, but I don't have a big budget and I'm not sure I want to wait another 6 months for my carrier to pick the Kaiser up (if they do...the TyTN was their first ever HTC offering and it came out a year after ATT picked it up)
