Any WiFi only users (no data plan)?
Am I the only cheapskate who doesn't want to fork over $40/month for occasionally surfing the net or checking mail?

I mainly want this device for consolidation purposes.

I read a comment on Amazon about some guy who got a phone bill for several hundred dollars because the device defaults to data plan first and he couldn't figure out how to disable that.

I'd love to hear from other WiFi only cheapskates.

I never use the GPRS on my device, always wait for a free wifi hotspot. The need to check emails or go onto a website while I am out is non existent, they can all wait if they want me to reply! Don't worry, I'm sure there are quite a few just like us, I think anyway!

Oh and welcome to the forum Mike, hopfully you become an active member!

Thanks. The more I'm thinking of it, justifying it in my mind, and talking to my friends, everyone is encouraging me to splurge for the data plan :-)

Regards,

I'll be on of those who has the data plans. Unfortunately, almost required in my line of work, even though I do admittedly ignore many of them until I'm in front of my laptop.

However, when keeping up on the Red Wings when stuck at a wedding, it proved to be invaluable..

I subscribe to a limited data plan since I almost always have access to WIFI. I monitor my data usage carefully because it can be quite expensive if I exceed my usage.

When I went into cingular, they said they won't sell anything less than unlimted for 3g because it's so fast, you can exceed the limited plans by downloading a few videos on youtube.

After a lot of agonizing, I finally decided to wait for the HTC Kaiser and then get the data plan. This is going to be an expensive investment, after I get the 2 cradles, belt holster, car charger, software, etc.

data plans are so expensive (cingular charges an additional $40 a month! thats almost as much as my phone and message plan). any more you can get wifi wherever you go if you really need to be tied to the internet.

whenever i get a new device i delete or modify the data connection so as to aviod accidentaly using it.

to do this:
just go to start, settings. select the connections tab and select connections.

select manage existing connections. tap and hold on the data connection and delete it. go back to the previous page where you clicked "manage existing connections" and select the advanced tab.

click the select networks button. change both drop downs to my work network. click edit select the proxy settings tab and verify that "this network connects to the internet" is selected.

whenever you set up or attach to a wifi network make sure that you configure it under the network adapters tab and select work under where it says this network card connects to:

then associate with an ap and verify that you have network connectivity.

Outstanding! I've copied/pasted this into my outlook for future use (if I get the Kaiser, subscribe to the data plan, and later cancel the data plan :-)

I'm in the group of people that have the unlimited package. They do give you a $5.00 discount if you have phone service and the unlimited data plan includes unlimited (1,500) text messages a month. It really matters your access. If you are around many hotspots to connect, then the data plan doesn't make sense. If you are more of a power user and or are not in a hotspot infested area, then the data plan could be good for you. I personally need "always" access and it's not often that I'm around a hotspot.

I was thinking of getting the 5825 also, but don't want to pay for the $40 data plan. The next lower plan is $24 for 20 mb. How quickly can you go through 20 mb just surfing the web. I would like to carry only thing instead of 2 (Axim and cell phone). Does anyone know what Cingular considers a PDA phone and a smart phone. I have noticed most magazines and trade papers call the Blackjack a smart phone, but Cingular calls it a PDA phone.
