My latest 8525 WM6 rebuild

I was looking at some of the ROMs at XDA's and I saw one that REALLY appealed to me.

It was the Dopod Lite! WM6 Optimal Base Rom: V1.2 6mb Page Pool

According to the chef:
Quote:
From my own testing and use, the latest stock WM6 Hermes Dopod rom has proven to be the fastest and most stable of the current official WM6 roms. This is supported by the fact that a number of the well known chefs are using it as their base. (Sleuth, Shaps, and some others) I've been running my own version for awhile now, and am very pleased with it: its ability to sleep and play music, its skip-free A2DP, and its speed.

However, it has a moderate amount of bloat, which can be removed to make it better.

I have stripped the following: Transcriber, Windows Live, VOIP, Voice Commander, Autoupdate, Catalog, Error Reporting (though it still shows in Settings), SQM, Ceipui, Calculator, ClearVue pdf reader, Zip, the less-used ring tones, and the standard movie clip. Probably some other things too. I have also compressed some files to gain free storage space.

The result is a fast, stable rom, with a minimum of clutter, which performs all the basic functions very well thank you: Phone, Internet, Java, Office 2007 (without OneNote), GPS, etc. etc. It is ripe for customizing in your own special way. If you want it to become a developer rom, add that stuff. Add custom themes? Go ahead. Add functionality? Ready and waiting. There's plenty of free memory and storage space: 30.06 meg, and 59.51 meg respectively (V1.0, 6mb page pool). I could have added a few meg to program memory by reducing the page pool from 6meg to 4meg, but I chose not to do that in the interest of maximizing stability and functionality.
So what it is is a fast clean ROM with no 3rd party ANYTHING in it... In fact it doesn't even have all of WM6 base code in it, as some accessories were removed in the interest of making it as lean as possible.

So here is my application install log as well as before and after screen shots.

When I reset my device, I install as many apps as possible from cab files on a memory card. I have a folder containing all the cabs, and I have even numbered them in install order to make it easier to keep track of.

I may go back and do a hard reset to better log some of the individual tuning that I did... Especially since I found a freeware CAB packager that I may try to capture some of the reg tweaks into to streamline my configuration.

Final with skins... (as much as any device that is constantly tweaked can be)

Amen to that! Besides, 8925 comes out, we won't have to worry about memory!

my wife liked to call it anal retentive...

you will always need to worry about ram... someone will port photoshop to it eventually and sloppy developers will bloat their code.

What car mount is everyone using for their 8525? I am very interested in rotating the device sideways for GPS viewing... Appreciate the input!

Mine is in MyPDA, but it doesn't do horizontal.

That might make it easier for me to text while driving...

It's not anal, I have all my apps listed in install preference. What is the black skin, is that an SPB extended theme?
If and when, why can't we pray?

I must seem like Simple Simon, but, Radimus, how do you change the ROM on your 8525? I've read the threads at XDA, but I need someone who is organized and meticulous to walk me thru. I do use the Voice Command, so how do I keep that on board?

Also, to all, any idea when the Hermes II will be released by AT&T or is there another HTC model that they are favoring? What's this 8925 that I see posted?

Thanks

Quite frankly the process is pretty simple. Just DL the rom package, extract it to a folder on the desktop, have a fully charged device, connect via cable for Activesync, and run the exe.

It took about 10 minutes.

The chefs have made virtually all the add on applications into separate cabs that can be individually installed.

The voice Command is "Cyberion Voice dialer" or something to that effect

the Hermes II = TyTn II = Tilt = 8925 = gimme gimme

The 8525 that is now offered by AT&T is really the HTC Hermes, which is the code name they came out with to identify it. They "branded" it the TyTN for sale through their company. It has many names through other carriers.

Now, as exciting as the 8525/HTC TyTN was, the HTC KAiser, that will be branded the TyTN II by HTC. IT will be known as the AT&T 8925/Tilt because of the very cool flip up ability when the keyboard is slid out. Mobilitysite has all of the details on this or you can visit my site below where I have collected all of the information I have found on the 8925 and created a category on my blog for easy viewing. It will list all of the details and screenshots. There is also some video of the HTC Kaiser which is just AWESOME! I would highly recommend holding on the 8525 until the 8925 comes out in September.

Reason? CAN YOU SAY GPS! It will also have more memory x2 and a 3mp cam. That tilt ability of the screen when the keyboard is slid out is very cool I must say.

Back to the 8525 WM6, I am using the HTC released rom for AT&T. I have not been brave enough to venture past that. Time also has a lot to do with it. RAdimus is the best HTC evangelist around these parts. LEt us all glorify him and maybe he will continue to treat us to his very cool testing with the Roms! (When I say glrify, I mean that in some Demi-Mobility-God fashion and not to be misunderstood as taking away any props to the BIG "G"!)

I started with the AT&T WM6 rom, but it gave me some weird power consumption issues, so I took the plunge and tried the VP30 rom as it was already customized for AT&T.

I liked it, it had fixed my power issue, and seemed much tidier without all the extra AT&T crap installed (XM radio, and the music search, etc)

Last weekend I was going to hard reset and do another rebuild... we I noticed the Dopod Lite ROM, which was even cleaner.

There are those that like to have everything and then there are those that like bare bones... I went barebones and installed only the apps I wanted... and I still have a ton of space left I installed the voice dialer, but then removed it, since I really only need the quick dial tabs on Mobile Shell
