I was looking at some of the ROMs at XDA's and I saw one that REALLY appealed to me.
It was the
Dopod Lite! WM6 Optimal Base Rom: V1.2 6mb Page Pool

From my own testing and use, the latest stock WM6 Hermes Dopod rom has proven to be the fastest and most stable of the current official WM6 roms. This is supported by the fact that a number of the well known chefs are using it as their base. (Sleuth, Shaps, and some others) I've been running my own version for awhile now, and am very pleased with it: its ability to sleep and play music, its skip-free A2DP, and its speed.
However, it has a moderate amount of bloat, which can be removed to make it better.
I have stripped the following: Transcriber, Windows Live, VOIP, Voice Commander, Autoupdate, Catalog, Error Reporting (though it still shows in Settings), SQM, Ceipui, Calculator, ClearVue pdf reader, Zip, the less-used ring tones, and the standard movie clip. Probably some other things too. I have also compressed some files to gain free storage space.
The result is a fast, stable rom, with a minimum of clutter, which performs all the basic functions very well thank you: Phone, Internet, Java, Office 2007 (without OneNote), GPS, etc. etc. It is ripe for customizing in your own special way. If you want it to become a developer rom, add that stuff. Add custom themes? Go ahead. Add functionality? Ready and waiting. There's plenty of free memory and storage space: 30.06 meg, and 59.51 meg respectively (V1.0, 6mb page pool). I could have added a few meg to program memory by reducing the page pool from 6meg to 4meg, but I chose not to do that in the interest of maximizing stability and functionality.

So what it is is a fast clean ROM with no 3rd party ANYTHING in it... In fact it doesn't even have all of WM6 base code in it, as some accessories were removed in the interest of making it as lean as possible.
So here is my application install log as well as before and after screen shots.
When I reset my device, I install as many apps as possible from cab files on a memory card. I have a folder containing all the cabs, and I have even numbered them in install order to make it easier to keep track of.

Before just after hard reset and turning off all today items
After installing my apps and a bit of app configuration
I may go back and do a hard reset to better log some of the individual tuning that I did... Especially since I found a freeware CAB packager that I may try to capture some of the reg tweaks into to streamline my configuration.
Final with skins... (as much as any device that is constantly tweaked can be)
and before the peanut gallery chimes in:
