How easy is the AT&T 8525 WM6 ROM Upgrade?

Earlier today Breley posted about the AT&T 8525 WM6 ROM UPGRADE so I downloaded the ROM upgrade and had to make the decision if I was going to do it then or wait until I returned from the VON trade show I was on my way to this morning. Of course, knowing that I had the ROM and if I was off to the show, I would be thinking about it all day so I decided that I would give it a try, hope that it was fast then head off to Boston.

Let me tell you; the install was faster than they said and it was absolutely the smoothest ROM update I have ever performed. I was incredibly pleased how easy the process was and was even more pleased at the smoothness that Vista handled the entire process. So what was the experience like? The first thing I did was to attach my device and run the install.

As you can see, it began by verifying the software on my PC and installed some device driver software.

There are 28 more pictures and an explanation of what was happening after the break

Then it gave me the message that the HTC USB Sync was installed successfully.

<img id="id" style="border-top-width: 0px; Is Vista going to recognize the device? How long will it take? Am I going to have aggravation? Well, it did recognize the device very quickly, it literally took minutes to sync and there was absolutely NO aggravation. I was totally pleased with the entire process.

As soon as the update completed, my device booted and I got the AT&T screen

<img id="id" style="border-top-width: 0px; Then as if by magic, the small green WMDC screen appeared and was quickly covered over by this screen

<img id="id" style="border-top-width: 0px; Very cool ... now it was time to sync with my laptop. Will it take? Will it be as fast?

So I connected the 8525, it immediately saw the device and installed the driver software.

Was it a smooth process? Yes! Absolutely! My hat is off to HTC, AT&T and Microsoft ... it was painless and WOW, what a difference an OS makes!

I played with the 8525 for just a few minutes and was really pleased with the initial performance and there was one feature that made me really happy. There was an "X" button that really closed programs!! Very nice!

So, I was off to Boston to attend the VON conference. But wait ... even though I didn't install any software, it did install TomTom (for some reason) from my memory card. So I quickly paired my GPS with the 8525, configured and re-registered TomTom 6 and set a route to the Convention Center ... and I was off and I had a BIG smile on my face!

With a new device I like to use it for a day or so before I add anything. This is like having a new device ... noticeably faster, very responsive and it has some neat features. Tomorrow I'll slowly start to add a few programs to make my ability to Experience Mobility even better.

Oh, and the VON conference was terrific!

View Original Blog Post

Wow, that's a lot of steps, but it is probably worth the wait and hassle. WM6 is very nice. Although it is just a few little things it fixes, it is still worth it.

Oh and,
Hello Jack : Hehe.

I have upgraded mine to WM6. Only took about 10 minutes and no errors. This is not a major upgrade but rather little tweaks and minor updates. I had several programs that had to be reinstalled:
Pocket Quicken
MemMaid
Odyssey Mobile GPS
Microsoft Voice Command
Vidya Screen Capture
eWallet
IntelliGolf
I'm happy to report that all are working fine.

I'm interested in Goodlink support... I know that the ROM says it's not supported, but I'm wondering if anyone has had other success? Also, does this add SDHC compatibility?

From what i've read, 4gb support is there... But I haven't seen it first hand

I use Seven's beta client for OWA and push mail support, if you have a goodlink server, I don't know, but i'd bet it being developed, if not already available in beta

Seven and OWA.
So if I have OWA available to me, I can use the Seven BETA on WM6? Then I don't really need to have access to the Goodlink server, right?

I'm DLing the client now, but I couldn't find the 8525 as one of the options for DL, so I chose the 8125 as the next closest thing. Hope nothing dies when I hook up.
