Windows Live Search Mobile Setup Guide On AT&T Tilt
With the new version of Windows Live Search Mobile just being released, I thought I would give it a test and let everyone know how it worked and how to install it.

First, go to Untitled Page on your device and download the appropriate version. you can also navigate and learn more by going to Live Search Mobile on your PC.

Second, open cab file and install it to your main memory or storage card. since the Tilt is loaded with memory, mine went to main memory. The file that is installed onto your device is 700K or so. LOL, I had 96000 free!

Third, after installing the program, exit out of all installation programs and then navigate to menu/programs/windows live search. Initiate the program and marvel that all this goodness is free!

Fourth, from the home screen on windows live search mobile on your device, tap menu/settings/ and then enable speech recognition, set the GPS Com Port to COM4, United States is the default, and tap cache to storage card if applicable. you can also set the size of your cache. I set mine to 64mb.

Fifth, tap done, and have at it! If you are sporting the new AT&T Tilt you will be amazed at the speed and accuracy of this GPS enabled device! Upon zooming in, it accurately located me in the correct corner of my house. I figure it was accurate to about 5 or so feet! Good God Y'all!!!!!

Oh yeah, one other tidbit is to make sure that you enable your quick GPS application to auto update fresh downloads to help your GPS locate satellites faster!

On a bummer personal note with my demo device, it locked up from the GPS screen when the screen saver initiated. Soft reset, and things are running again.

I have downloaded and tried this program for the first, so i am not sure if I have the newest version.
Under 'About', it reads Version 2.5.2840.19676
Is that the newest?

IF I am using the newest version, and I did follow your detailed instructions DSmithZ28, then I have a problem. The GPS says it cannot find my location. It is foggy outside, here on Cape Cod, should that matter with GPS?

It is the most current version. You can verify this by looking on the home screen of WLS and seeing gas prices in the lower right hand corner.

Foggy can be a factor. Did you run quick gps? If it won't download, there is another problem, maybe somehting in your area, or your data plan maybe an issue. Are you connected to your carriers 3G, Edge, or GPRS?

Alos, are you on com4?

I am very confused

I do Not have TelNav service, I do connect via GPRS, and I have no problem with messaging, Internet.

I went to my local AT&T store, the manager and clerk had a pow wow and said that if I did not have the TelNav service, I couldn't connect to any satellites.

Was I mistaken to think that with the Tilt and no GPS service contract that I would be able to connect to services like Google Maps and Windows Live?

i am getting really frustrated...please help

OK, I am going to post this in both this thread and the GPS tread, maybe it will give more information to other folks.

I downloaded and used Chartcross GPS 1.04, which showed me the GPS satellite locations and confirmed that I was working out of COMM4.

I posted on XDA.com, and others said that they also had trouble connecting with Google Maps and Microsoft Windows Live.
They say that both of these programs can take a long time to initialize and connect to the Tilt GPS receiver, causing it to timeout.

So, the logical question is, what is the availability of a utility that extends the GPS receiver search time for the Tilt?

I am having a lot of problems getting claification on if the Tilt's gps is locked if you do not subscribe to TeleNav. AT&T's plans are 5.99 for 10 trips or 9.99 for unlimited use. Enev if you do not use the TeleNav, you still get billed for the service. I do not have an answer if you do not subscribe, does it lock it out. Anybody not subscribing and using the GPS???

Confirmation: AT&T Technical Support claims that even if you DO NOT subscribe to TeleNav, the HARDWARE on the TIlt is Available to be used by other GPS Software such as Live Search or Google, but they are not supported by AT&T (Well Duh, they can barely support what they advertise!)

So this is GREAT news!!!!

I don't have the telenav package and i can still use my gps, it took a while but after updating the quick gps about three times, google maps began to work, then after a day windows live decided to work too, I'd suggest getting some clear sky for your initial connection and restart the app a couple times. If at first you don't succeed...

Clear sky was the fix.

The fog has lifted and I went out to a large area with no trees or buildings and was able to connect to Google Maps as well as Windows Live Search.

Here is a question; downloaded the trial for TomTom and it would only install on my Tilt, not my micro card...is that the norm?
