I gained about a good 15 MB when I did this. Oh and the AT&T 8525 gave you the three seconds to do the same thing as well. The one thing that sucked about doing it on the 8525 was that the keyboard mapping was all messed up if you did the soft reset. On the Tilt, it kept the correct keyboard mapping, which is great. As for the proxy manager, you can find it on XDA-Developers.
Just did the clear memory routine on Friday. 6 hours later, I had everything I wanted installed. Configuration was another issue. If anyone does this and has problems accessing email, or internet, there is a cab file on XDA Developers that will correctly set up your proxy for AT&T.
I finally broke down and trimmed the fat. I also added a 6gb card. I probably picked up 70MB of memory with the mods. I added KaiserTweak and it's now 3 or 4 times faster across the board. What a pleasant change! :)
I plan on getting a Tilt very soon. My question is: Is there any of the bloat ware that I need. What do I need to double back and install to make sure the device works properly.
if you like PTT, then you WANT that
if you go and explare at XDA, I'm sure that someone has extracted all the bloatware cabs and has made them individually installable... at least they did you for the 8525...
The only ones I use occasionally are the PDF viewer and cyberion voice dialing.

what is a soft reset and how do you do it? and please be very descriptive, i've never had a pda before and at the rate i'm going w/this tilt i can see me throwing it against the wall in a couple hours.
a soft reset is when you just tap the reset button 1 x not holding it down or pressing other buttons like the power button which will erase all the info on the device its like pulling out the plug and putting it bag in to fix a silly eror message!!!
Good Luck and welcome to windows mobile were if u need the functionality you will love it if you dont it can get verry annoying its not as easy as a palm!!!
Do you guys actually stop to check the stuff that comes flying out of your mouth? With the At&t customization package I had 96.92mb free flash memory and 74.74MB free RAM. After interrupting the customization package I had 111.55MB free flash memory and 75.10MB RAM. RAM usage is what would show this abundance of bloatware slowing down the system, yet there is only a 0.48MB gap between the two setups. A gap that narrows down to a mere 0.03MB when the default theme is used (free RAM 75.07MB)
Both were checked after just after being reset and booting up using Settings>System>Memory.
If you need that extra 14.77MB of interal flash memory go for it, if you want to custimize your phone go for it, but your just kidding yourself if you think the extras AT&T install significantly slow down the machine.

For me it's about getting that internal memory back. I didn't expect it to give me back anything in RAM.

A rather interesting "first post". Welcome to the site, I think!
