AT&T Tilt and Microsoft Voice Command

I wonder if anybody in this forum has a good experience regarding running Microsoft's Voice Command 1.6 in the Tilt. Although the application installed OK and appears to be functioning, it is erratic and its voice recognition leaves a lot to be desired. It certainly fails to do what the program states such as email notification etc, etc... It seems that it does not work very well with the Tilt's microphone (as far as I can tell). Any input will be welcomed.

I have been reading about the poor BT Audeo issue over at XDA. There is not a fix yet for the Jawbone low volume problem on the Tilt. It seems it may be an issue with Qualcomm. IT appears also that there is a voice issue to. I will keep everyone posted or just head over to XDA for a soon to be Fix.

Yes, I think that the poor audio over BT and poor mike control are the issues. I want to let you know that I have poor audio control with the Motorola HS820, so it is not limited to Qualcomm. I will try to call AT&T technical support today and I will post here their answers.

UPDATE: I just paired my old Logitech Mobile Travelor BT Earpiece and it worked great. I swear that it is even louder on the Tilt than on the 8525 prior. It is not very comfortable, but at least it is loud.

Now I have a useless Jawbone... Or at least until they figure out something to fix the Sound Level problem...

How low is the volume on your Jawbone? I have not had any problems with voice command and my Jawbone. In fact it works great!.

It's very low. However, it was low on my 8525 also. The volume on these are not very good to begin with, and on the Tilt, it is lower than on the 8525.

That's interesting as well since I though the volume was too loud on my 8525 as well. Of course, I was coming from the Audiovox XV6600 (HTC Harrier) which was a cool PocketPC Phone in concept, but mediocre in execution.

I've read that this can be caused by turning on the 3G mode. If you switch back to EDGE, supposedly the Bluetooth problems clear up. Haven't verified this though. I'm setting up my sister-in-law's phone and will post if I can confirm this.

I have the Tilt using Voice Command and it works just fine. I use a Motorola Bluetooth Handsfree device and I have no problem doing handsfree dialing or carrying on conversations.

There is a solution

The Jawbone does have its own volume control. For info, see the user manual, pages 14-15. (If you lost your copy, you can download one at: Introducing the brand new Jawbone Bluetooth headset ) From the manual:

Adjusting the Volume

Jawbone will adjust the volume accordingly depending on your noise environment. If you feel that Jawbone is either too loud or too faint, you can adjust the volume of your call in two different ways:

1. Press the volume keys on your mobile phone to increase or decrease the volume.

2. Press the ‘NOISE SHIELD BUTTON’ one time to increase the volume by one level. Jawbone has a total of six volume levels. By pressing the ‘NOISE SHIELD BUTTON’ again, you will advance through these volume levels and hear a 2-step tone. Each successive volume level is identified by a corresponding pitch increase in the second tone. After reaching the maximum volume, you will hear two tones of the same pitch. Once you reach the maximum volume level, if you press the ‘NOISE SHIELD BUTTON’ again, Jawbone will return to the lowest volume level.

I made the adjustment to the loudest setting and am happy with the results. Try it!

Thanks for posting this. I was unable to make it work with two Motorola BT headsets the HS850 and the H700. However, when I replaced with Motorola's H12, everything worked fine. The HS850 and the H700 had difficulty maintaining connection with the Tilt. I strongly recommend the H12 although it is an in-the-ear BT device which I did not favor originally.

Microsoft's Voice Command actually works fine and does have excellent voice recognition when the right BT headset is attached!!

Does anyone else here feel a little bit misled by all of the 'features' of this device? I paid $500 for this phone, only to find that the bluetooth sucks. What gives? How much does it cost to get working bluetooth?

Nobody has been misled, it is a fantastic machine but it needs some attention to get everything running well.

(a) Bluetooth. The Tilt utilizes version 2.0 of the specification and thus, certain BT headsets may have problems with it. I did mention that Motorola's HS850 and H700 did not work, but the H12 did (it is BT 2.0) and it actually works excellently. I found the implementation of BT in the Tilt the best that I have seen and I have managed to connect with many cell phones both in the US and Europe, with laptops and with desktops with the minimum of fuss.

(b) Voice command. The Tilt does not come with Microsoft's Voice Command. This is an application that you need to purchase. It works excellently with the proper BT headset.

(c) For browsing, using Opera Mini 4.2. It essentially imparts to the Tilt most of the browsing capabilities of the iPhone (although currently it does not support flash). You would be able to zoom in and out of any Internet site, not only the ones that support phones. The Tilt makes it easy to install this version of Opera because it has the Java applet already installed.

(d) Install both Microsoft's Live Search and Google Maps with My Location. Both use the GPS capabilities of the phone excellently (the recent version of Google Maps is much faster than the previous one) and you will get tremendous usability. Both of these packages are free.

(e)I had access to a variety of Resco applications (File manager, Photo Viewer, Voice recorder, Internet Radio and Registry Editor) from my previous phone that add a substantial amount of usability to any PDA phone. Yes, they cost some money but they are all bundled for what I would regard as an appropriate fee.

(f)If you want TV, you can certainly subscribe to Mobic TV but this goes beyond what I want to do with the phone but trying the service out shows to me that it works very well.

Overall, the Tilt is a terrific phone and in many ways it can substitute for a laptop when the laptop is not an option. Both Google Maps and Live Search give tremendous capabilities in finding everything and finding your way in unknown places.

If you want to play with the phone more, I strongly suggest installing Kaiser Tweaks. It is a great piece of software and makes certain adjustments to the phone that nothing else would accomplish. For example, it allows the dial keypad to remain on after you have dialed and makes the phone compatible with HSDPA, etc., etc....
