Aximsitex50icon One Handed Dialing????

I am about to pull the trigger on a new Tilt. The one thing that concerns me the most is it easy to dial this thing with one hand? I am on the road alot and it will not work for me to have to pull out the stylus to look up a number and dial. I went to the ATT store and tried it but I was having mixed results and figured that I could get better with practice. In the dialing mode those number icons on the screen seemed to be a tad small for my liking. Also how easy is it to get to a list of last number dialed?

Thanks
Jeff

Dialing with one finger is what you were meant to do on the phone screen. Personally though, I have picture dialing setup through the HTC Home plugin so I just have to tap once on the picture to bring up that contact number. While driving I used to use Cyberon Voice Commander, but I haven't tried it yet on the Tilt...I have heard there are some copmpatibility issues though.

Anyone know if the HTC Home plugin contact pictures can be stored on the storage card?

that is one of my bigest complaints about this device. BUt it is such a powerfull device that its worth it if you "need" it. you can also try microsoft voice command with a bluetooth headset i have NOT tried it let me know if anyone has and if its accurate. also there are programs that make the numbers bigger but therey are hard to figure out which one is a good one without bugs!

Jeff:

I have owned the Tilt for a week now and have found it impossible to perform any one-handed dialing while driving that does not significantly divert your eyes from the road.

What has worked for me, surprisingly, is the voice dial feature provided by AT&T (for a fee, of course). It allows you to not only assign a voice tag to individual contacts, but also GUI screens like Call History. This is probably the safest option.

I moved over to the Tilt a week ago, and while still getting used to it, I find that you can do one handed dialing. At the phone app, I find the zones for each button are large enough for my fingers, and the auto complete by name is pretty cool. Just start typing a person's first or last name, or first initial then last name. Even if you start typing out their phone number it will find it.

The downside is that you have to look at the screen to see the keypad and there is no tactile feedback, but it is a small price to pay.

I can slide it open with one hand pretty easily, and if you just start pressing the number keys it will dial the numbers. This is easy because they are silver on the keyboard. Then slide it closed and hit the green call button. I've had mine for over a month but don't think this takes any special skill to do with one hand and press everything with your thumb.

On a side note, I've found myself using it more and more while driving with the device opened up (not tilted), using only my right hand. You can use the scroll wheel and okay botton with your index finger, and use your thumb to type and arrow left and right (I can't quite reach the far left of the keyboard). I don't think it was designed for this, but it works for me!

I usually just press the call button to get the phone app open, then I just dial with my thumb. I've never really had any issues, and I have small hands with fat fingers(italian).

One handed impossible

You read it here first. Blow this phone - it's absolute crap, for the reason you just unearthed. Impossible to use "on the move" - whether walking, driving or anything else. I'd rather have my laptop to make a phone call! My company phone "fell under the car" and I have to use my old $5 phone now!

I can't believe all these people's "crafty" ways to try to make a phone call with one hand with this dreadful box of crap? I come from Africa, and this sounds so much like life on the dark continent! Let's cover one eye, take off both shoes, close your eyes and blow through your ears. Great idea. Or get a Blackberry, PALM or Nokia phone - i.e. one that works! You people are smoking crack.

wind: have you tried the HTC plug in dialer available for this? I'll post a picture shortly of it but it has much bigger buttons. Also, you may want to try voice dialer included. It works great...

Is using speed dials really that 'crafty'

I've got a tytn type device and can dial just as well with a touch screen dialer as on a 'regular cell'.

I use the HTC plug in for speed dial but I really like the voice speed dial included with the TILT.

Microsoft Voice Command 1.6 works excellently provided you have the right BT headset. I recommend Motorola's H12 but others may do as well. The voice recognition is excellent, even in somewhat noisy environments.

With an application such as Microsoft Voice Command, or its internal voice application (Voice Speed Dial), it is certainly a phone that you do not need any hand to dial a number. In addition, the wheel on the left side of the phone works in a manner identical to those in Blackberries and if you are familiar with this, you can do single-hand dialing although you would need to look at the screen (that you have picked up the right contact to dial). However, these complex phones call for voice dialing. The Tilt comes with "Voice Speed Dial" which works with voice tags and your voice only; I strongly recommend Microsoft Voice Command as it does not require voice tags and it works with all potential users of the phone and it also automates application launching. If you enable its notifications, it will read to you the header of every email arriving! Great application.

Great applications to install in this phone is Microsoft's Live Search and Google Maps with My Location (its GPS is faster than previous iterations). The functionality of these applications is fantastic. For web surfing, I cannot but wax enthusiastically about Opera Mini 4.2 beta (which provides an experience similar to that of the iPhone) although the beta still does not support flash (although the final version will support it).

Phones like the Tilt are as good as the applications that you will install in them to realize their capabilities. Otherwise, they are just little bricks and not much more useful than the free cheap phones. If you are only interested in voice (phone calls), this is not the phone to get, period. There are many phones better than this. But if you are looking for a phone/PDA combination, this is the best by far and it can become even better by installing Kaiser Tweaks (although I hate to recommend this to people not familiar with PDA phones).

Also, to get the best of this phone, install a 2GB card. OK, it is not as good as the 8 GB iPhone, but capacities will increase and it is removable. If you have this card, make sure that you install Microsoft Voice Command and Blackberry Connect to the main device (not the card) because you would "kill" the phone otherwise. All other applications can be easily installed in the card.

And talking about Blackberry Connect, this another great reason to buy this phone. It is a bit slow, but it works well and it adds only a $5.00 fee to the monthly unlimited PDA package. If your company has a Blackberry server, this is the way to go.
