I recently received an AT&T Tilt as a gift from my father but the thing is, it's still locked to AT&T but I don't use AT&T. How do I unlock it? I tried going to this website Mobile phone unlocking. How to unlock cell phones. GSM CDMA unlocker, data cables, unlock tools software & equipment and I ordered an unlock code for $34 dollars but they have not given me an unlock code or anything. I tried it again and I paid another $34 dollars but still no unlock code. :realmad: Do any of you guys have any suggestions? I'm really excited to use my Tilt. :)
If you go to www.xda-developers.com and search for "Tilt Unlock" or something similar, you should find the information. But be wary of asking questions there.. If you have not read and memorized all 257,283,221 Threads they will bash on you...
Call at&t and they'll do it for FREE. I went into a store, bought a tilt, then called them and told them I bought the phone so I could go overseas and I didn't have an at&t plan. The first two reps said it would take a week, the third time I called they gave me the unlock code right then and there. So I suggest you call them. :approve:
I'm not sure about the States, but here in Germany and Finland, the phone companies are required to unlock the phone if you ask them.
Sometimes they charge you for it, but usually not much.
I have unlocked three phones this way.
It's worth asking the question and pushing it a bit.

In my vicinity, there is an outfit called "the GSM store" which will unlock any GSM phone for very moderate fee: $20-30.

You've already been duped into paying for it a couple times. Call them, tell them you bought the phone to go overseas because a customer service rep said it was possible to use an overseas sim and you need it unlocked. Some of them say it will take up to a week, just give them your info and call back. You'll eventually get someone that will do it right then and there.
If you pay for it again I will personally come to your house and dope-slap you.
after contacting cingular for the tilt, were you given an unlock code or were you able to go to the store and have them do it for you? Also, do they give any directions on how to do it, if not is there any sites that explain them? i'm also very new to phones and understanding how to unlock them.
we did it all over the phone....they asked for my imei number so i gave it to them along with my email address and after a week they sent me the unlock code with directions in my email...:D but you have to add global roaming to your phone before they give you an unlock code...idk why but that's what the lady told me.
thanks for your response. global roaming, dont they charge more for that?? thats strange.. the whole purpose of unlocking the phone is so that you can use it with other carriers. After you get the phone unlocked, can you cancel the global roaming?

Call AT&T for the unlock code. I did and had the code in three days.
AT&T doesn't like unlocking your phone unless you are out of your contract on your device or you bought your device outright. We will unlock it for you yes but it is a pain in the rear for us to do. And yes it will take a week and no it doesn't cost you ANYTHING. I dont know about the whole "global roaming" thing. sounds like someone was trying to nab some commission but thats just an assumption since you did say you dont use AT&T personally.
