use without sim card?

Does the Tilt work without a sim card? If using no phone features?

I think the first time I turned mine on it came up with a SIM card error and would go no further until I transfered the SIM card from my phone or activated the one that came with it.

I am pretty sure the short answer to your question is "No"

I had to replace a tilt that failed. After I changed SIM to the new one, and did the Kaiser Tweak, and loaded information, I needed to wipe the old one prior to returning it. It did come up without the SIM and gave a missing sim notification. I was able to go to the "Clear Memory" program and other functions worked, and I was able to bring it up again after the reformat. It works, but no phone usage or data usage would work, but it may make emergency calls.

So, what does one do to get past the Sim card message? I know I've heard of people using these phones without a sim before. I would think I could go in and just select an option for it to not read the sim etc or turn off phone function?

My other option is to buy a cheap sim card and just have installed but don't use it.

Nothing to do, there is just a message that a SIM is not installed and that phone functions will not work. Then you go to the Windows start menu and bring up what you want. A SIM is the phone activation from ATT. I am not sure you can "buy a cheap SIM" but if you have ATT you can put any SIM that is active in it and use the phone features, which would then charge against the SIM account that was used. If you don't want it as a phone/PDA but just as a PDA there may be other choices where you only pay for a PDA instead of paying for a phone/PDA device.

I've had many different pocketpc PDAs, also Palm PDAs and I want something with built in keyboard. I have a clie UX50 now and like having the keyboard, but want to go to Windows Mobile. I've been debating on getting a Pocketpc phone combo for sometime now.

There are cheap sim cards online, 100 min for $9.99 (AT&T). I could use a sim if one can't use the Tilt without one, but I'm sure there has to be away to use it without a sim card installed.

I like the tilt feature on the Tilt/TyTN and also the WM6 and included GPS. Most of the reviews have stated its way more of a PDA then a phone, which is what I want.

Makes sense. It does a whole lot, and is a phone, too. Sounds like you can have the best of both worlds, having a phone once in a while if you need it. It is a great machine.

I changed from a Axim X51v and cellphone to a Tilt. It's the only one that comes close to the Axim. I have used it without a SIM card as sometime I just don't want the bulk of the Tilt and slide the SIM card into an old RAZR.

So, do you get any kind of errors without sim card installed? What settings do I need to change to use without sim card?

I din't change any settings. At boot up, it told me I didn't have a SIM card (I didn't) and after that it went to the normal screen.

just turn off the radio in the comm manager so you wont get any "no sim" errors.

ive never used a windows mobile phone that locked you out of the device if no sim card was installed
