Mad wifes tilt was stolen...

someone grabbed it while she was dancing at a new yr function. sucks... she called me at 1203am to wish me a happy new yr. by 1210am it was gone. :{

what steps should i take besides calling att and reporting stolen. Can the bad guys use this ph by replacing the gsm chip with theirs? att rep said they sent a signal to fry the gsm chip making the ph locked? is this possible? will the ph work at all. whats to stop them from going on a site such as this or calling att and asking for the unlock code or how to? any ideas? thanks. shes now back on her 8125. life for her sucks! shes sooooooo sad now. she really loved her tilt. santa just got it for her. santa cant afford to purchase another so he feels bad too.

Since they already fried the chips, it's too late now. You could have called the number and ask that it be returned no questions asked. Or told them there's a reward for its return.

And, yes, they can disable the chip.

blocking the SIM is a simple thing for AT&T to do

You can put a new SIM in it and make the device work fine... so can the thieves.

You COULD have put a PIN in it, which will usually survive a hard reset, but can't do that now.

I have heard of proceedure that you could encrypt the SD card, but store the key on the phone memory, so a hard reset would "lock" the SD card and they'd have to reformat it

There are also programs out there that use the GPS in the Tilt to secretly send you a text message or email with the location of the stolen phone (lat & long coordinates you can enter into Google Maps).

But if I were in the phone-stealing business, the first thing I'd do is take out the battery and the SIM card.

You might want to look at sprite terminator for your next device. It can send you a text message when sim's are changed, as well as the gps co-ordinates of the device. You can also do a complete wipe remotely, to protect any data if you don't "lock" your device.

Big Smile Looks like American Express stepped up

My wife received a credit for the tilt, case, and sandisk memory card. So now we are waiting to hear back from AT&T. Her 8125 keyboard is on its way out. She had over 3000 text last month. I was shocked when I pulled up the bill. lol. Good thing we have paperless billing. :approve:

Oh and get this.... whom ever stole her phone had the balls to send her drivers lic. to her in the mail with a note attached... thats for the great new year present! No return address. I checked with the Post Master and he said it appears they just dropped it into a blue bin. DAMN!

Those messages can be traced by location, and whom the messages/calls were placed to.... by whoever used the phone, via the provider.
I'd be hunting someone down ~

I'm a firm believer in karma...
Wouldn't it be wonderful to find out some guy in a stolen car was txt messaging on his stolen phone while driving and hit telephone pole or something.....

Great minds think alike! lol, that would be funny. Due to my profession it would be great if I were the person responding to the scene. Yeah he'd be going to jail. lol

Should be able to lift some finger prints off the envelope. I doubt the person was that smart.

If the phone was used after it was stolen on your account they should be able to track the person down.
