Question Dropped Calls

It never seems to fail, at least one out of every four or five calls end up being dropped on the Tilt. I put my simm card in my Motorola V3xx and yet have to get a dropped call. With ATT it seems like you always start out with a strong signal until you place a call. Calls seem to get dropped when the phone changes from 3G to Edge.Seems like the Tilt has trouble keeping the 3G connection, as I said never happens on the Motorola V3xx. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yep, same problem here,

First I tought it was the network and ATT send me what they called a "SIGNAL ENHANCER", don't know what it is, but it pump up a few bars at the time, but later the problem was the same. Then I asked for a replacement and they chage my unit, SAME PROBLEM.

It looks like the Tilt have some problem when chaging from GPRS, 3G and Edge, even when I use the Internet it happen. I try using my SIM in my wife's cell and it never happen. In places where other ATT phones has full signal the Tilt at one moment appears full and the next is looking for signal, some times I have to turn the radio off and on again so it find the network faster.

Apart from that problem I like my Tilt, I just hope that it is not a hardware problem and a Fix will come out soon.

Are you running bluetooth?

HTC released a fix for dropped calls while using bluetooth a few weeks ago.

My first tilt would drop calls and lose a signal then start searching for network and never find one again unless it was reset. It would search and search and search and never find the network, but a reset would make it come back to life for awhile, then it would lose it again. They sent a replacement, and it did the same thing, but a bit more often. I was resetting it every few hours, and at the ATT store in Hawaii we did a reset, and without moving out of the store and with the ATT person watching it, in just 30 minutes there was no signal, and it went in the search mode and could not get the network again. So another replacement was sent. The newest replacement locks on and even when it loses a signal, it finds it again. Instead of a soft reset every few hours, it just works the way it is supposed to. There were some bad ones I suspect. If you got a second one that does the same thing, have them send you another, because it should not do that. I was disgusted and ready to go back to the 8525 but the third one was the charm. 3 1/2 weeks now with no problem. In hindsight, I did do the Kaiser tweak on this one, but not the other two, and maybe that helped. You might try the tweaks, and if it still doesn't work, have them send you another. I am glad I did, I could not be more pleased with it now and it seems that dropped calls, and lost signals are a thing of the past.

I'm paying close attention to this thread and like the advice you are offering. I am thinking seriously of switching providers and phones, but have been concerned with coverage in my area. I NEVER have dropped calls here with Verizon, but that's the only positive thing i'll say about them.....so....my final concern is: Is the Tilt a really good "phone"? I get that you guys like the PDA part, but is the phone part just as great? (I know i'm still working off tales of the old 8600 only be an ok phone). Thanx.

Disappointed with Tilt

I finally gave up on the tilt. I too had the dropped calls issue which was driving me crazy. I found some discussion in the ATT forums talking about various third-party programs that would help deal with the switching between 2g and 3g which seems to be the main cause of the calls being dropped.

I too tried several Tilt phones thinking I just had a bad one. I even tried different ROMs, but never could solve the issue.

I also experienced other things with the phone that really left me disappointed. The GPS was sketchy at best. Some days it would work great and the next it couldn't "center on my location" when using Live or TeleNav couldn't find my location.

The final straw was the screen. I have dropped lots of phones and never had a screen break. I went to pick my phone up from the nightstand and grabbed it funny, the keyboard slid out and the screen cracked. I have to tell you that was a shock. There may have been an imperfection in the glass somewhere, but I wish they would have used a higher quality face on it.

I chose the phone for its features and the ability to use skype. However, the dropped calls, poor GPS, and the somewhat "fragile" state of the screen was quite a let down. I will be replacing the screen and either selling it or keeping it as a spare phone.

Good luck with your Tilt's. It has a lot to offer, but fell short for me.

I had Verizon before getting the Tilt. To be honest, the working tilt (first two had problems) seems to have coverage in some areas a bit better than Verizon (Like the Islands off of California) not quite as good at a few parts of the islands where Verizon worked, a little better on the ocean between the islands, and about the same in most other areas so far around Southern California. The defective one worked good in Hawaii, but only for 30-45 minutes, but we will see in a few weeks how the newest one does over there. I suspect it will be fine, it is not showing any of the symptoms of the previous two. I was not excited with the first two, but they definitely had problems. The ATT coverage should be on a par with Verizon. I cover some area where coverage is sparse at best, and so far the new working tilt has done fine, the previous two defective ones, were horrible. I know the coverage is there, my wife has no problems with her ATT phone. I have no doubt that there were some bad tilts out there. ATT did replace them though, and that means something. They even offered a Palm, or whatever else I wanted if the Tilt didn't work right, but the third one did. I am glad I stuck it out, and have one that works very well. It is a super PDA, and at least a good phone, maybe not superior, or excellent, but I can't complain about the coverage at all.
I found some interesting pros and cons with the tilt. Originally I used an Axim, and BT internet through my Verizon LG phone. That was nice back then. Then I went with Verizon Palm, and the thing I hated about it was with GPS (using BT GPS receiver) the keyboard was always lit up, and was blinding me at night in a car, or on a boat especially, and that was very annoying. With the Tilt, GPS navigation is on a par with the Axim, the built in BT works fantastic on several programs, there is no keyboard lit up, and my PDA is my phone. It beats Palm hands down, and is as good as, but far more convenient than the Axim/phone combination. I never use my poor, trusty Axim anymore, and think the Tilt has done a good job of replacing it. The Tilt also gives my Laptop a really fast internet connection, and the Kaiser tweak that enabled HSPDA made a huge difference over the 3G speed, which was OK, but not quite as good as Verizon. The HSPDA speed is better than Verizon in my opinion, and has a lot of coverage. All of those factors put the Tilt in the plus column, and for me was the best combination. There is something special about sitting on a horse on the back of a mountain in Hawaii, editing a web page, answering Email, and running someones credit card for payment, all on the Tilt. It is interesting, too when you turn on the GPS (phone turned off, of course) in a plane, to see that you are at 39,000 feet, flying at 468 Knots, and have 450 NM to go (while reading an e-book) on the Tilt. Bottom line, it does a lot of things for the money.

Can anyone verify that the above solution solves the dropped call problem?

Also, the link didn't work for me.

Update.. Back in Hawaii and a little scare. on the second day I couldn't make or get calls, and had to use a landline to call ATT and was sent to the store to replace the SIM. When I got there the store said lightning had hit an antenna during the night and it was being repaired, so there was no need to change a sim. Later and since then it has worked as it did on the mainland, with no further problems. My analysis is that the first two phones were indeed bad, but third is fine. Works well, and holds onto signals well.
Aloha to all

this is my second tilt. the first one had a defective digitizer and screen taps did nothing. this one is flawless. I love it to death. I use a boxwave screen protector. I set all the kaiser tweaks to 'advised'. I never experienced the dropped call issues, but then again att doesn't have any 3g towers in my area. edge only for now. I so totally love my tilt. I am typing this on it right now. I am too lazy to press the caps key to start a new sentence. lol. I find it interesting that in typing replies like this, caps are not automatically put in. however if I am typing a text message then they are. hmmmm. still haven't tried editing my pedicure website on this tilt yet. imho att has a winner with the tilt.
