Anyone cancel AT&T contract in order get in on Tilt deal at Newegg?
Nearly pulled the trigger on a Tilt at AT&T until I see the deal newegg is offering. I'm beyond 2 years for my existing contact so I'm thinking of cancelling it and resigning a new 2 year contact with newegg. I can save approx. $115. I can go with the same family plan and pick up a new phone for the wife (she not a tech geek like myself and the phones she's interested are free w/ 2 year contract :approve:). Of course I want to keep the same phone numbers. Is it worth $115 for the time and trouble to cancel and re-sign with newegg? Has anybody gone through this exercise? Any gotchas?
I did the same thing you are planning to do. First you aren't really canceling AT&T. Newegg just sells you the phone and requires you to sign a 2yr contract with AT&T (newegg gets referral money and you get a cell phone discount). All your bills and stuff still come from AT&T.
I believe when you go through the ordering process on newegg you will eventually get to a page where it asks you if you are a new AT&T customer. If you are an existing customer you put in your AT&T account number/phone number and you basically add a new contract to your account.
I would still give AT&T/newegg a phone call just to make sure everything will be ok. Atleast thats what i did.
But to answer your question everything has gone smoothly so far and I'd recommend going this route. I know at the AT&T store at the mall they had a tilt there for $340 with contract and I was able to get it from newegg for $170 not including rebate
Sometimes, they require you to be a new customer (most likely), but sometimes, you can ask that they just add 2 years to your, in this case, already up contract.
Data for AT&T is, I believe, $20 a month plus any voice you may want, at least for the iPhone it is, not sure if plans are different for all other phones.
According to AT&Ts site, they offer, for $75 a month, unlimited data and txt plus 450 minutes.

I was thinking of upgrading to the 8925, but it has been long enough that whatever the latest and greatest will be, should be out in 4-6 months, so I'll just wait.
Wouldn't it be nice if the tilt 3 (or whatever it will be called) has 512 mb and vga and 2 mem slots? (just imagining)

The included plan details make it sound as though you are only getting a voice plan with the phone.
I want unlimited data and txt, and fairly low(450/mo) minutes, and I can't figure out how in the world to do this on the newegg website.
Do I have to go through checkout to start modifying the plan, or is it just voice?
You need to proceed to checkout to modify the plan. After you've selected the phone(s), you'll have the option to select features, data plans, etc. If you have an existing AT&T plan, select "upgrade" from the dropdown during checkout. You'll be asked for your account number & existing phone number. I called newegg yesterday and they made it sound fairly easy. You'll be charged an $18 reactiviation fee and you will lose rollover minutes (for former Cingular customers). You'll receive the phones and new sims in the mail and you're on your way...
I just called att customer service and complained a bunch. Over at tiltusers.com we have a member who is a att employee and helps us out by keeping us up on what they can and can't do as well as telling us which route will be better for us.

I've used the refurb 8125 and 8525 with no issues at all.
I would be comfortable going with a refurb. In fact, that's probably what i'm going to do. The phone is for personal use and I just don't see myself using the data plan enough to justify $30/month. I never far from home or from a wifi spot. Newegg requires the data plan, AT&T does not.
Just checked the AT&T site for the Tilt. What's up with the "no commitment price" for the refurb Tilt being $100 more expensive than the new phone? :rolling:
Site now no longer lists "no commitment price"...
