On my Treo 650, I could set a ringtone for unknown callers, a ringtone for callers in my phone book and different ringtones for specific people. Is there a software out there that can do this for the Tilt? I know that I can have different ringtones for individuals and one ringtone for everyone else. It was nice knowing if it was a stranger caller by the ringtone.
No I can't. That is why I went through the trouble of initiating this post. If you can explain to me how to accomplish this, I would be very grateful.
Goal:
1. One Ringtone for all known Callers. (Tilt Can Do)
2. Individual Ringtones for Individual Callers (Tilt Can Do)
3. A Different Ringtone for all Unknown Callers (Tilt Cannot do without including #1, unless you assign each known caller the same ringtone, one by one)
Can you assign all your contacts to a group and give that a ring tone, then all unknown callers will be outside the group and therefore have a different tone.
Maybe try a program like photocontacts or something like that. This may help you.

Welll Keen you tell me how to set different ringtones to different contacts becaause i see you know how to do it ! Please
It can be done... but there is no easy interface to do it on these phones... it has to be done in the registry, unless someone wants to write up an app to do it...
it takes editing a couple registry keys, but they were already present, i just had to change the values. the 2 keys you are looking for are:
HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/RingTone0/
and
HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/KnownCallerRing0/
when i first checked them (using the registry explorer in Total Commander), KnownCallerRing0 had no values. so i opened RingTone0 and copied all the entries (Sound, Script, SavedSound, and Category) and pasted them into KnownCallerRing0.
KnownCallerRing0 represents the ringtone for people who are listed in your Contacts, but don't have a caller specific ringtone. edit the Sound value to point to the ringtone for them. mine is: \Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones\Vintage 2.mp3
RingTone0 represents the ringtone for any calls that are not from someone already saved in your contacts list. edit the Sound value to point to a ringtone for these "strangers". i have: \Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones\Silence (5 Seconds).wav
after changing these, i did a soft reset and then made a call from my work phone, and...*RING* *RING*. then i went to a phone at a co-workers desk who has never called me, and..........nothing..........just peace and quiet. i don't know if you need to copy all the values from RingTone0 to KnownCallerRing0, or if you have to do a soft reset, but that is the exact procedure i took and it worked. i hope this helps someone.

There is no easy way to do what you want to do. I went through one by one and set the special ringtones for the single people that matter most. Then I went through and set the rest of my contacts by [friend & family], [business and co-workers] and others. Once I had EVERY contact set with one of the ringtones, I set the default ring tone to something else. That way I know if they are special, Family, work or not someone I care about. THE DOWN FALL Every time I reset my phone and resync it I lose all this work and have to start back over. And with over 250 contacts, this takes a long time.

I use an app called VIPPimRingtone to set ringtones to my contacts based on category...
I choose the ringtone for groups like 'friends' or 'work' or 'girlfriends' and set those people to a category. Then i rename the ringtone to that category. and then use the tool to assign that ringtone to the contacts with that category.
Individuals also are in a category Bill, Tom, Mary... with similarly named ringtones.
I can easily switch out the ringtone by just replacing the MP3 file with a new one... and when I do resets, the VipPimRingTone app has a config file to automate the assignments
