Activesync Filter by Category

On my old smartphone, I could select which Outlook categories of contacts to download to the phone. On my new Tilt, it doesn't give me that option. How can I only download selected categories rather than my 5 or 6000 contacts?

All the extra contact make is harder to dial partial patterns to find the desired contact entry when dialing an outbound call.

The other option is does anyone know of a dialing skin that supports category filters?

Thanks,
Bernie

Unfortunately, we lost that option with Activesync 4.0. I kept thinking Microsoft would add it back with later version of ActiveSync, but so far....nothing.

Any suggestions on a work around solution?

Is it possible to use contact filters when name dialing?

I don't have the same device you have, so your software is probably different than mine, but within the contacts application, you can filter by category. Once you've selected a filter, any searching you do is restricted to the contacts within your filter.

I've created a category called Speed Dial and assigned it to the people I usually call. I leave that filter on most of the time because it simplifies my search for names when i want to look someone up or call someone.

Of course, there is quite a lot of third-party software you could find that would probably give you a sexier interface.....

Thanks for the quick replys Julie!

I've tried the filtering in contacts, but it does not take effect when in the dialing screen, so when I use the Tilt as a straight telephone, the filters are not in place. Boy this is sure a big weakness/step backwards for Microsoft. If I had know about this, I probably would not have upgraded.

I dial directly from my contacts. Have you tried that?

Yes, I'm going to have to switch to that, but it's virtually impossible to use when you are driving. I work in the field much of the time and it makes it more time consuming to have to pull off the highway each time I need to dial a customer's number.

You don't use anything like Microsoft Voice Command on your Pocket PC when placing calls? If you are driving that's really the way to go.

You might also check out Fonix Voice Central or Fonix Voice Dial.

For calling while driving, just give people voice tags and then you just have to say their name and it will call them for you.
Takes a little bit of set up but worth the effort in the long run.
I haven't used a keypad for years.

Edit: Julie is always quicker than me.
