Of course. Just follow whatever steps you wish to compose a new text, then touch the keyboard logo to pull out the on-screen keyboard/block recognizer/whatever, and have fun.

Do you know how rude and inappropriate it is to text message in class? You think your teacher does not notice these kinds of things, but you may be surprised....and don't expect much sympathy from your instructor when you go to them because you are having difficulties with the material.

This is one of the reasons my classroom rules are that students turn off their devices when they come to class.

I for one have to say that I hate it when my teachers get enraged when you text in class, because I for one mainly text my mother to find out rides/news and important things. I have talked to peers very little.

However, I think that as long as the student is paying attention (I do this, i text with my current phone (tilt coming soon) without even thinking about it), they shouldn't be punished.

There isn't much that is so important that it can't wait until an hour and 15 minute class is over. I don't text in class when I am trying to teach and I expect the same courtesy from my students. It is rude both to the instructor and to the other students who are trying to pay attention.

Oh and by the way I do not become outraged or angry over this. I just don't allow it in my classes...the rule is cellphones and other connected devices off during class.

I (obviously) have a phone (Tilt). It's a convienence (and, being a Tilt, a decent PDA). I use it (as a phone) when I need to. Not often........

I am so glad that I lived most of my life and that my kids grew up before wireless phones became a human appendage!

I'm just going to drop this because I think we are on different sides of an issue and will never really come to face about it. I enjoyed the argument while it lasted though :P

I must agree with teacher. Texting is mostly one of the stupidest things humans have developed. My daughter and her friends text while sitting at home within 2 feet of phones and have a conversation. I make her pick up the phone and talk. A quick one sided message is fine, but a conversation should be by voice.

as for texting with the touch screen, I recommend this. http://tiltsite.com/2008/05/htc-diam...and-available/

As for the rest of your discussion, it should ultimately be up to the student. If hey understand the subject they have nothing to loose. As long as they do not distract the other students they should be able to text, if they need to make a call then go outside or out in the hall. It makes sense to say teachers shouldnt be able to text during class because they are teaching, if a student is giving a presentation they shoudnt either.

In the real world, you rarely see a meeting where you are required to power off your phone. I would be pissed if I were told I need to put my phone away for whatever reason. Anyway, the entire purpose of school is to prepare the next generation for their jobs in the real world by teaching them these things, not telling them to pretend their phone doesnt exist for an hour and 15.
When I am giving a presentation I don't feel that people are being rude to me when they pull out their phones. They don't do it because they don't care what I have to say, they know and I know there are more important things in the world. If people care what you have to say and are genuinely interested, they will be respectful and limit their texting to a minimum.

er,,, No it should ultimately be up to the teacher... If the student is unwilling to obey their rules then they shouldn't be in the class in the first place.

In the real world if you start texting someone during a meeting you're going to really piss off that boss/client that you're trying to impress... At the very least you're sending them a message that they are less important than the people you are calling instead...

Knowing that there are times to work... and times to play is actually a sign of being a grown up. And that's what school is supposed to help you be.
