New Tilt Owner, Not real tech savvy

Looking for a little help:

1. As an amateur, should I dare to attempt to re-map the PTT button? I don't use PTT and accidentally bumping the button is irritating.

2. Is there a junk e-mail filter out there to download?

3. Most of my music is in iTunes - can I copy some of that music to my Tilt?

4. I've installed the HTC Home Plugin and black dialing skin. What other apps would you recommend for sort of an intermediate user?

5. Any recommendations for websites designed specifically for viewing on a mobile device?

Thanks

If it's irritating you, remap it.

2. Is there a junk e-mail filter out there to download?
Not that I'm aware of. Flexmail lets you setup filters though check out Welcome to WebIS.net - Home

3. Most of my music is in iTunes - can I copy some of that music to my Tilt?
NOPE, not unles you find a way to strip the DRM off the files

4. I've installed the HTC Home Plugin and black dialing skin. What other apps would you recommend for sort of an intermediate user?
It really depends on what you'd like to do, 3rd party email clients, RSS feed readers, Sirius radio player, games, internet radio.... The list goes on and on.. Check out Handango.com, pick your device and select compatable software for the device just to see whats out there that you'd be interested in....

5. Any recommendations for websites designed specifically for viewing on a mobile device?
Opera or Opera mini
http://www.opera.com/

Thanks

the easiest way to beat the DRM in itunes is to burn the music to CD, then use Windows media player to rip to the PPC

- You can easily remap the PTT button
- I am not aware of a junk email filter. In any case, you are "pushing" your email to your phone, sop you should be able to configure junk filters at your computer with your ISP.
-If your music is in the mp3 format, you certainly can
-Applications recommended:

Windows Voice Command (essential)
Ilium Newsbreak (newreader that gives you access to podcasts)
Opera Mini 4.1 (a must have)
vTap
a Voip application (I have Skype)
Microsoft Live Search
Google Maps (with My Location)
Google Search
Kaiser Tweaks (essential)
Resco Utilities (a must if you want to edit the registry)

- if you have Opera Mini 4.1 (or have access to the Skyfire beta) you do not need WAP websites. These browsers allow you to have a "desktop experience" with the phone (IMHO, they are better than iPhone's Safari).

Regarding the iTunes issue: If all you want to play music that you bought from the iTunes store on your phone, you will have to find a way to get past the DRM. Burning to a CD and re-ripping to mp3 is free (sort of) and works... but it is tedious and requires you to re-enter a lot of ID3 tags and such. A few years ago when I had this problem, I used a program called TuneBite that made things much easier. I had 200+ songs and didn't want to have to burn them all and re-tag, so I spent the $15USD for TuneBite and am glad I did. It worked well and rescued my music. Since then, I no longer buy music from iTunes.

Regarding other app I'd recommend: Check out SPB Mobile Shell. Completely overhauls your phone and really makes it a joy to use, IMHO.

The one for the predecessor of the Tilt, the 8525. Works great!

That's unfortunate... looks like they added in all the video processing stuff (useless to me) and jacked up the price. If they were smart, they'd split out the audio portion into a basic package and sell it for $10-$15. That'd sell like hotcakes.

Agreed....
I'd buy it in a second if it were $15

It allows you to use your voice to control the phone. For example, you can call a person by simply saying "Call John Doe at mobile". You do not have to embed voice tags in your contacts to use voice. You can also start a program by saying "Start [program]".

I am also new to the tilt and this is my first smartphone, but I am some what tech savy as far as computers go.

I was able to re-map the PTT key fairly easy. Not a difficult task.

A couple of suggestions since I have had mine for less than 3 weeks and have been missing around with it:

-If you plan on testing stuff out, don't set up your phone completely (ie e-mail, etc). It is best to just figure out what you want, what programs you like, etc then put the finishing touches on the phone. It gets annoying having to re-do e-mail setup, etc.

-Check out the SPB software. Those are great. You pay for them, but they are amazing, especially SPB Diary.

-There is a limitless amount of customization for this phone. I started out with HTC plugin like your self. Was able to add a Oakland Raiders background, then went with some SBSH software, but didnt like it. Then I tested out SPB software and loved SPB Diary, Insight, Pocket Plus and Finance. Then I added HTC and SPB together. Now I am back to using SPB by itself.:)

Have fun with your new phone and play around with it. I still haven't figured everything out!!!!
