Phone won't reconnect after loss of signal??

Hey, I've noticed lately that if I'm out of signal range for any extended period of time that the phone will not find a signal again unless I cycle power or remove the battery. I've also read threads on the AT&T forum about this same issue. Anybody have any fixes for this? Thanks.

what happens if you turn the phone service off and then turn it back on again?

Cycling power off/on works, but I don't want to do that every time I can't get signal. Not to mention, if it's in my pocket, I don't even know I'm missing calls or emails until I actually take it out, see that it's not connected then cycle power.

I can tell you of my experience shortly after I got my first tilt. In California for two weeks all was well but when I got to Hawaii, as I traveled and lost a signal, nothing on earth would get it back. Flight mode on/off, find network, waiting, nothing would ever get it back. ATT said some of them did that and exchanged it, but the new one did the same thing, another exchange and the third one had no problem. However, once in a while, not often mind you, it will still fail, typically if I have gone several days without a soft reset. You don;t need to to do the battery deal, just insert the stylus into the little hole at the bottom of the phone by the charger connection while it is on, and it will restart. If you have the problem all the time, it is a bad phone. If it happens after three or four days, you should get in the habit of resetting it every few days, which is the best thing to do anyway. I restart it every other day, and that seems to eliminate the majority of problems. Try the soft reset for a few days and see if that cures it, if not get an exchange. The explanation was that if it went from 3G to Edge, and back to 3G it was ok, but if it went to GPRS, then it would not go back to anything, it stayed locked and looking for that same old GPRS signal, even though you were now in a good 3G location. Nothing would make it find the good or best signal again, it just wanted that old one, and wouldn't let it go even if it wasn't available any longer.

Thanks guys, I'll pay more attention and see what signal it is latched on to before it locks up. AT&T is telling me to exchange it but I'm not quite ready to do that. I've swapped the sim card yesterday and will try that a few days first. Thanks again.

I know this problem very well. I experienced this as well. Unfortunately, I started getting battery drain as well. I started the battery drain thread and I mention this happening to me. I soft reset everyday but I still have the problem.

Okay, I got my new Tilt yesterday. I'll see how it goes. I'm also going to try updating my Rom to the latest version to see if that helps.

Yeah, stay out of Non-3G areas. :exc: I read many forums where people with tilts live in non 3G areas. I don't know how in the hell the phone functions. Going into this area NUKED my phone. ATT Tech support said there were problems with 3G phones in Non 3G areas. They didn't know if the should be added to list, but there is a list of phones. Something to do with the software( don't know if it's the phone or the tower). They said for me to give them to July 21 to resolve may problem. The fix was to be build some more 3G towers, they're building a new one a mile away. BTW I had the 8525 and looking back on it, the same crap happened to that. The warranty dept. gave me a Tilt because it was discontinued.

Okay, I'm now on my third Tilt phone and nothing has changed. Don't you think AT&T might get tired of giving away new phones if they know this is a problem? I sure there is a fix for it in the near future.

Nope. I went through 17 phones in one year. Everytime I called with a problem that was clearly a network issue, they said it was the phone. Transfered me to the warranty dept., and shipped me a new one. Heck, that's I get the Tilt. My current phone would get discontinued and they would give me the next model. They want to exchange my Tilt now because of the issue in this thread.

I was on the phone with their tech support again today. I told them to quit sending me phones and get the damn problem fixed. They put in what they called an "engineering ticket" to see if they could find a problem. They are supposed to get back to me within two days with some kind of answer. I'll keep you posted (ha..ha..).

Jeez your third one!

My theory is if it tries to get a connection for an hour and cant connect, it goes into some sort of standby mode and only makes an attempt every couple hours so not to drain the battery if there is no signal. I had this program earlier this year when I drove from Seattle to Vegas. It only happened twice when I got back to civilization after driving through the desert for 4 hours.

It is just a theory, but I would look for a program that retries to make the connection to the cell system after it is lost at a more frequent time.
