Is there a way to mute the alert when you get a text message?

I have mine set to a ringer and if I'm by my phone it gets annoying having to hear it ring 4 times before it shuts off. On every other phone I've ever had I've been able to press end or some other key and it would mute it.

press and hold button 4 for about 5+ seconds

see if the phone goes into mute/vibrate mode

Well, I have a button to switch to vibrate. What I'm wondering is when I get a text message and the long ringer is going off, if I can cut it short if I have it in my hand.
