How does AT&T know you are tethering

I am a newb to smart phones and am wondering how does AT&T know when I tether my Tilt to my laptop, doesn't it use the same data connection?

Or do they just guess?

Unless you are watching movies on U-tube, dowloading mp3's, or just plain download a lot of stuff they probably will not not. The have that unlimited plant but its not unlimited. They have terminated peoples accounts for downloading too much & using up bandwidth. You should be fine if you are just checking emails & casual web browsing.

read that before tethering. they have a way of knowing.

Their unlimited data plan does mean it unlimited. If you are routinely frequenting site that don't have a mobile version web page they can look at that too. From that make the determination you are tethering.
