Worried Problems tethering via USB/Internet Sharing

Thought I would give tethering a go using Internet Sharing. I am trying using a USB cable and Internet sharing
The Tilt/Internet sharing reports it is connected and on the XP pro SP3 laptop I can see the 'new' network connection which tries to obtain IP settings which subsequently fail and therefore no usable network connection is made.
Can someone tell me where I am going wrong?
TIA
Antony

Tethering

I've found that the wireless modem on settings doesn't work for tethering. Instead I've used the Internet Sharing application found in the Windows directory to tether. It's a bit cumbersome to open file explorer, go to Windows, scroll down to Internet Sharing to open it. I haven't found a way to create a shortcut, so I just copied the application to a folder in my storage card so I can find it easier.

I am trying to use Internet Sharing not wireless modem but it doesn't seem to be working.
On the laptop it appears to fail at getting IP details.
Do I have to manually configure something, instead of just starting Internet Sharing?
TIA
Antony

Tethering

Make sure it says USB and Medianet in the drop down boxes. Then press the connect button. You should get a new connections on your laptop (If you open the network connections screen).

Try wifi router. It will create a wireless connection using your phone.
