/possible long post ahead....

Before I decide to replace it within the rest of my 30 day trial period... My next step is to call I.T. support since nobody at the corporate ATT store knew anything about this stuff, which is kind of sad in a way, but I digress.

Oh and .. Hi everybody ! The name is Doug, and I've been with ATT since last February, having owned (up until now) an Sony Ericsson W810i (and of course many a phone before it), with the Tilt being my foray into the world of smart/ppc phones. Though, I get the feeling that with so many features and bells and whistles, it was only a matter of time before something went wrong.

Here's what's what: I left the phone alone for the first week, as I was getting to know its capabilities without any tweaking etc. I then realized I was tired of viewing both the phone and SIM contacts at the same time, had sought out a way to fix this, and happened upon "Kaiser Tweak". Great little app, which is residing now on my 8GB Micro SD card inside the Tilt. My only beef with it, in regards to the view sim contacts tweak, is that when the Tilt is given a hard boot, it loses the setting and goes back to the default state. Not a huge deal, but an inconvenience nonetheless.

During the week, I ventured into Ikea (Brooklyn, NY) with my wife and noticed that my signal was pretty poor. I was able to call a friend, but later was told that he couldn't understand a word I was saying. The problem was that the Tilt was teetering between 3G (possibly even just G) and EDGE and eventually (as we were exiting the place) dropped the signal all together, never to return, even as we were outside on an extremely clear night. I had to re-boot the unit (did a hard boot) for it to get its signal back. Never before have I had this happen with any phone I've owned.

Then I saw (on the XDA dev site) the Comm Manager app, which I promptly downloaded, so that I'd be able to toggle 3G on and off, which is also very convenient. I downloaded and installed this just the other night. These are the ONLY two apps I've installed, and Kaiser tweak isn't really installed as you know, it just sits on the micro sd card. Now, I don't know if it's something caused by an Kaiser Tweak setting, or something that Comm Manager did but, my Tilt has been displaying some pretty sketchy behavior, starting with :

Xpress Mail. For the past day or two, I've had to jump through hoops to get the mail app to work. I initially set Xpress Mail up with Yahoo being my primary mail account, and then set up Gmail as a secondary, though I forgot at that time that I had Gmail POP3 as well as IMAP setup, but not forwarding. (I just saw that tonight). Anyhow, the first week of using the service, everything worked great. But in the past 2 days, I noticed that mail wasn't being pushed, and I would test just to make sure it wasn't anything weird. I had mail sitting in my accounts, but it just wouldn't come through.

Then I noticed that the Yahoo account would just suddenly not be there at all ?! It would literally disappear ! I'd do a soft reboot, and it would be back again, however. Another thing which is still happening, is that after having tried several things including deleting both accounts, and opting to re-create the accounts, I'd only be able to create one account. But then synching wouldn't go through. I eventually just re-installed Xpress Mail, and now I'm finally, my yahoo mail is being pushed again. I also set up Gmail to forward it's mail to Yahoo.

However, there's still something terribly wrong. When I try and create another email account, nothing happens, at all. I've tried three ways of creating another account. Through menu> tools> new account (which only leaves me at the inbox) and also menu>options>New Account, which also does nothing, and lastly, from the Today screen, when I click on the Messages button, it takes me to the "messages", "Yahoo" account and "New Email account (tap to setup a new account) page. When I click on New e mail account, it simply takes me to my Yahoo Inbox ?

. Now, I don't mind if this was just a fluke, but it drives me crazy not knowing why this has happened, and whether or not it will happen again after my 30 day trial is up. It's more than likely that I'm going to want to tweak the heck out of the phone should I keep it, but if what is happening now is the result of anything Kaiser Tweak (which I doubt) or the new Comm Manager have done, I'll be a bit wary of doing anything further. I mean, can these things "just happen" on their own ?

There's one more thing that has happened that I can't explain. When I hit play on the Music Plugin I get an error message saying: "The file 'Audio Manager' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file." I recall setting something in Kaiser Tweak which changed the properties of the audio plugin, but I set it to default now, and it's still bugging out a bit. Even when it was half working, it would seem to run through all the files that were on my micro sd card, and when finished, I'd try to play a song, it would take me to the audio manager and then windows media player would start but then claim that it couldn't play said files because it couldn't find the path to them ? Pocket Player on the other hand, works a charm. (I love that program).

Before this post gets out of control length wise, I'll end it here. I still have a few questions, but I'd really love to resolve these issues as quickly as possible, because I love the phone, but don't want to deal with constant quirkiness like this. I just want it to be stable. Everybody and their mother seems to be pimping out their Tilt's, and not having this problem, so I'm sure it's possible.

Doug, I was suffering with the dropped call problem for three months. I posted about it on this site. The G icon never showed up on my phone for six months. I went into a non-3G and the crap hit the fan. A ATT tech told me that they had had some problems with the software of other phones. He wasn't aware of the Tilt being one of them. I suggest you exchange your phone NOW!!!!!! So far I have (crossing my fingers) got the problem licked, but ATT had to repair a tower in area, I had to hard reset , disable HSDPA in Kaiser Tweak forever, and finally get a new SIM card. As for as Xpress Mail, I don't use it. I deleted that with ten minutes of having my phone. I set up my email on the device, I have my Yahoo email coming through every hour. No problem. I also had Netzero setup for a short while. I don't understand your statement about seeing the phone and SIM contacts, but as a general rule if you change something in Kaiser Tweak you should soft reset. Ok the music plugin..... You don't mention if you had HTC Home or anything, so are using the plugin that came with the phone? From my understanding that is a Windows Media Player plug-in. That would explain the error. Hope this gets you a little further along.

As psionandy said, do a hard reset - not a soft "reboot". You will lose any data so back up first. Then stop installing tweaks and such until you figure out the phone. If it is not functioning properly, you want to know that and save installing XDA stuff for later.

Well, I did a hard reset and that naturally took care of the Mail problem. It's good now. As for the dropped call, it was only that one time last week, and I'm sure that if I run into the problem again and again, the basic 1 year warranty will cover whatever it is if tech support can't figure it out. I'll also be getting insurance on it before the 30 days is up, because I'm probably keeping it. I really like the phone a lot.

True, true and true. I only really wanted to install Kaiser Tweak in order that I see only the contacts and not the SIM contacts, as it annoys the heck out of me to no end. But then I saw the rest of the tweaks it offered and ... you know the rest of the story. I also thought that the alternative comm manager is (still) a great idea for those times when calls are most important, and 3G is not at its full potential and is at risk of being cut off. Those things will never change, so long as I get lousy 3G reception in my apartment.

All is well for now though, and I guess that I'll have to do one tweak at a time until something starts acting up, so that I can troubleshoot. Seems that I've got a long way to go before fully understanding all that I'll be able to do with the Tilt. But how's a geek supposed to resist all those tweaks and mods ! ?
